Damn, I really adored him. Several years ago I had an appointment with him. He was so gracious to me. I was overwhelmed to have spoken with him as he had long been a favorite. I remember my first exposure to his wit came when I was in seventh grade. I would make haste hurrying home from school to catch his jokes on his daytime game show "You Bet Your Life." His humor was so fresh and just a bit naughty. Meeting him was a true highlight in my life.

If it worked for you Amos, it is because your computer has a cookie from their website because you or someone who uses the computer you are using, at one time registered with that site. That is what "by subscription" means with online newspaper sites.

George's link didn't work for me, and won't work for others who are not registered with that newspaper. Hence my courtesy link to MSNBC for those who wanted to read about it immediately.

At the time I looked in on this thread, at Google News there were only 14 story links carrying the news, nearly all were subscription sites. By now, over an hour later, there are 320 links to stories carrying the news, many of which are not subscription sites. So the links to both the San Jose Mercury News site George provided, and the MSNBC link I provided, are largely irrelevant.

For those of you unfamiliar with Google News, the link provided to all stories will show whether a subscription (ie registration and acceptance of the site's cookie) is required to get through to the story. Some sites allow you through to that story only without registering. Others don't, and you must register in order to read their story.

However, most links to news stories at Google or Yahoo in the US papers are virtually identical, because they are simply wire copies of stories.

"You Bet Your Life" was Groucho.

Carson was all-the-way-up-to brilliant. One of the absolute best.

Around the same time, he met fellow magician Johnny Carson, 11 years his senior, who was doing a magic act at a church in Lincoln.

As a result of his Nebraska upbringing, Cavett has had a strong affinity for the culture of the Sioux and other native tribes of the Great Plains and has owned many artifacts. This interest ultimately would lead to his TV interview with Dr. John Neihardt.

That's funny about the link I found. I'm not subscribed to that newspaper. I just did a google search on Johnny Carson after I heard on the radio. The only link they had available was to the AP article. Five minutes later one other link showed up with news, but it was only the first half of the article from the first link. Really odd!

I agree, that is purty wierd. Usually the wire service articles from Reuters just show up as a link to Reuters' site, and the AP links go to newspapers, I think. But then, when I do news story searches at Google nowadays, I always search through the Google News engine, and not the Web engine.

Maybe it has something to do with how the first story surfaces at Google vs. Google News search engines when they first come online? Dunno. But it still doesn't make sense that you and Amos could click through to the story from your link in the first post, but I got the subscription page. When you click onto the related stories link about Carson here isn't even showing the link to the Mercury News anymore! It was the first link when I typed in "Johnny Carson" at Google News at 2:23 p.m.!

I am among the many who wouldn't think of going to bed until you heard his monologue, and his Carnak bit. I thought he was a classy act, and I loved the way he exited. When it was done, he left, and let the work stand on its own. Was there ever a funnier moment than when he threw the tomahawk and it got that target in the 'nads?

There won't be another like him.

Mick, my friend, I hate to contradict you, but I believe it was Ed Ames who threw the tomahawk. Carson was sitting at the desk with tears rolling down his cheeks. (Of course, I could be wrong...and often am.) Nevertheless, I wholly agree with your sentiment.

He was a class act and I agree there will not be another like him. Johnny treated evryone with dignity, it didn't matter if they were a superstar or an average Joe. Definately imo the best talk show host the states have ever produced.

Sad to hear he is gone. I was always surprised that after--what 30 yrs. on the show---he left and was never really heard of again. Paar would come back for a special or an intervies now and again---and of course Steve Allen (who started the whole show) went on to so many other things (being the true intellectual that he was).

As to the Tonight Show. Leno has the ratings---why I know not. Carson had class and wit, Paar had class and intellect, Allen had it all. We are left with formulaic people who adhere to the same each night---from Letterman buttoning his jacket to Leno doing I know not what--other than Hollywood hype.

In truth--Jon Stuart is the heir to late night wit.

But--Carson. Sorry to hear the sad news and it is a loss of another artist of class and wit.

Along with Carnack (sp?) the magnificent one of my favorites was Floyd R. Turbo, the hayseed dressed in a red flannel jacket with a goofy hunting hat. His rants were always hysterical.

No one could work with animals like Johnny Carson. He knew to step back a little and let the animals get the laugh, and he was the set-up guy. Same thing with little kids - he always let the kids get the best of him in such a loving, innocent way.

Of course, there were all those risque double entendre's that my parents probably wished I didn't hear. Wasn't there one about a cat sitting on a woman's lap and a question she asked him......

Johnny Carson knew timing better than any modern comdedian - no wonder since he worked with Jack Benny and Red Skelton.

Can you imagine Jack, Red, Johnny, Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Jimmy Durante, George Burns, et.al. all sitting around swapping jokes.....

Compared to those guys the comedians we have now are just high paid bus boys.

I believe that is one of the great urban myths. Raquel Welch was the woman in question.
