Delia Murphy also claimed rights to If I Were a Blackbird , which uses roughly the same tune . The mention of Donnybrook Fair in If I were a Blackbird would date the air back to the 1850s at least

Many thanks. So many sites had his name listed as the author but they all gave his birth/death dates and not a single one the year in which he wrote the song. It looked strange.

Spinning Wheel is there. Nothing to suggest Connemara Cradle Song . Doesn't read like his stuff either.

Aidan O'Hara's comprehensive biography of Delia Murphy (I'll Live till I die ) acknowledges Waller as the author of The Spinning Wheel - despite other claims in the context of Walton's publishing of the song. No mention that I can see, at first glance, of the authorship of Cradle Song - which I suspect means Waller didn't write it.

No proper index so I may have to resort to random searching!

Thanks, Martin. I have as yet been unable to locate a single page anywhere with the CCS on it attributed to Waller. I'm beginning to wonder if he wrote it at all. Do you know for fact he did? It's almost like every site repeats every other site.

The late Faith Petric wrote an article on the Connemara Cradle Song in Sing Out! Vol.47/3, 2003 (Behind the Song). I'm proud to say I helped her some with the research. In the article, the mistake of Liam Daly as the author is explained. Joe Hickerson finally found the source of the tune (Happy Home Waltz No 1, by Julien, Ca. 1850), but even he didn't know of John Francis Waller.

Great recordings of the song: Tommy Makem on "The Best of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem", Padraigin Ni Uallachain on "An Irish Lullaby", and Gordon Bok on "Dear to our Island". Sorry I haven't Heard Delia Murphy's version.

Does anyone know if Waller's version of this song appeared in print anywhere before 1909? I'm attempting to determine if Down in the Valley is a descendant of the Cradle Song, or the other way around.

However, Delia Murphy apparently claimed copyright in 1951. The British Library has sheet music in which she is the only writer credited.

On the question of an Irish language version - I think there is a modern song set to the air, alright. The chorus is lurking at the back of my mind but refuses to come forward! It's the sort of song taught to youngsters in "Irish College" i.e. summer schools taught through the language.

"Believe me..." would be early 19th C. If Delia Murphy wrote the cradle song, then it's mid-20th C. As mentioned a few posts ago, I've never seen it earlier.

There is also sheet music published by Waltons in 1953 where, apparently, D. Murphy is given as author or composer. No sign of it earlier, as far as I can see, at present.

Walton's New Treasury of Irish Songs and Ballads, which I would not regard as authoritative, attributes it to D. Murphy.

Soodlum's Irish Ballad Book doesn't attribute it at all, which is about what I would expect.

Can't find it in anything else at the moment.

Faith Petric of the San Francisco Folk Music Club has been researching this song and asked me to post this for her.

On a recording of the Connemara Cradle Song by Padraigin Ni Uallachain, it (liner notes) says: "Attributed to Liam Daly." Delia Murphy recorded the song in 1953.

The melody used for this song is "Down in the Valley."
