Subject: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Little Hawk Date: 01 Feb 05 - 06:37 PM I'm speaking of the bizarre and notorious relationship between the 2 well-known muppets of Sesame Street. Let's discuss it and share views. Should be a big relief from all the religion and politics threads. :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: GUEST,Layah Date: 01 Feb 05 - 06:39 PM I only very recently heard people suggest that Bert and Ernie were gay. Once I heard it I could see the reasoning behind the statment, but I never thought about it when I watched seasame street. They were friends who lived together, what's weird about that? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Little Hawk Date: 01 Feb 05 - 06:43 PM The thing that struck me as weird was that Ernie was such a sadistic little bastard all the time, with his manipulative "nice-guy" act, constantly driving Bert to the edge of either madness or muppet-cide. It's amazing that Bert didn't just get a gun or an ax and kill him. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: GUEST Date: 01 Feb 05 - 06:45 PM I, being young and nieve and optimistic, always thought Ernie was just having fun and didn't really mean to make Bert that mad. Bert always took things too seriously anyway. I identified much better with Ernie. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: GUEST,Layah Date: 01 Feb 05 - 06:46 PM Oh, that was me again. Forgot to write my name in. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Little Hawk Date: 01 Feb 05 - 06:48 PM Well, yes, Bert was too serious. I can see how you would see it that way. Still, it was a very peculiar relationship. They seemed to be codependent, but basically incompatible at the same time. I've seen marriages like that. :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Rapparee Date: 01 Feb 05 - 06:52 PM I personally think that...well, decide for yourself. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: GUEST,Layah Date: 01 Feb 05 - 06:53 PM I think really it was Bert who had the problem. He should have left Ernie. Ernie was just oblivious and didn't realize there was any problem at all. Maybe Bert came from an abusive family. When my brother was little he used to call them both Ernie. I wonder if that signifies something. Of course we had two uncles and he used to call them both Jeff. When we finally convinced him they were two different people with two different names the best he could do was to call one Jeff and the other "the other one" |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 01 Feb 05 - 07:06 PM Try this: Imagine Ernie saying to Bert, "Hey, Bert! Kiss my ass!" Now try to imagine Bert saying the same thing to Ernie. You can't do it! Bert could never tell Ernie to kiss his ass! Bert could think, "Ernie! Kiss my ass!", but he could never say it. He's far too hung up. Bert's a pressure cooker waiting to explode. Don't be surprised if someday you see a newspaper headline that says: Famed Muppet 'Bert' Guns Down Dozens in Cookie Store Shootout! |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Feb 05 - 08:00 PM I really love both Bert and Ernie. They're my favorite Muppets. What will happen to me if I run for President? -Joe Offer, potential candidate- |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: frogprince Date: 02 Feb 05 - 03:47 PM Your our of luck, Joe; Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson will put the word out on you. This country will never elect anybody who is soft on gays. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: gnu Date: 02 Feb 05 - 04:09 PM I thought they wanted someone who was soft on gays. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Stilly River Sage Date: 02 Feb 05 - 04:51 PM That should say "anyone who is soft on soft guys." Aren't they foam rubber or styrofoam pellets or something? And of course Bert isn't always hung up. Have you ever seen his "Doing the P-p-pigeon" song and dance? He's relatively relaxed for that performance. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Once Famous Date: 02 Feb 05 - 05:22 PM I hear that they both now live in San Francisco. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Clinton Hammond Date: 02 Feb 05 - 05:24 PM Ya know... they were based on/inspired by the cab driver and the cop from "It's A Wonderful Life"... :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 02 Feb 05 - 07:25 PM Bert has one eyebrow and is therefore evil. Ernie sings the Rubber Ducky song and is therefore only just short of god for me.... Rubber ducky, you're the one, You make bathtime lots of fun... Rubber ducky I'm awfully fond of you.... boe doe dodio! LTTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Auggie Date: 02 Feb 05 - 08:20 PM Clinton I remeber Ward Bond as the Cop, but do you remember who played the cab driver? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Don Firth Date: 02 Feb 05 - 08:40 PM What Jerry Falwell doesn't know (and don't anybody tell him) is that Tinky Winky has taken out a contract on him. . . . "Uh-oh!" Don Firth |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: open mike Date: 02 Feb 05 - 09:04 PM pidgeons!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Once Famous Date: 02 Feb 05 - 09:24 PM Auggie, I can't remember his name, but he was the same guy who played the father in the TV show The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Sorcha Date: 02 Feb 05 - 09:44 PM Well, IMO, they were probably queer as a $3 bill, but you know what? I DON'T GIVE A SHIT!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Peace Date: 02 Feb 05 - 09:57 PM Uh, folks, they are not real. Just helpin' y'all get a grip here. Barney isn't real either, and neither are those bloody annoying tellatubbies. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 02 Feb 05 - 10:02 PM Yes, Liz, "Rubber Ducky" is a great song. But the guy who wrote it is a sadist. Why? Because it's a kid's song. That means that every kid in the world whose mom plays a little bit of guitar is going to walk up to her someday while she's strumming one of the five songs she knows and say, "Mommy, could you play 'Rubber Ducky'?" And ya know what? Mom's not gonna be able to play it. Why? Because the chords are pretty darned complicated. Oh, they'd be no trouble for most of the guitar geeks that hang out here. They're a pretty straight ahead swing progression. But poor Mom that only knows ten chords is not gonna be able to play "Rubber Duckie". Then the kid's gonna get all upset and start crying and Mom's going to feel like a total failure at parenting. And all because the guy that wrote the song couldn't have just made it a simple G-C-D'er. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Peace Date: 02 Feb 05 - 10:04 PM Gonna need a spatula to scrape her tears off'n the floor. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 02 Feb 05 - 10:39 PM Thanks, Brucie. I was racking my brain trying to figure out how to work a spatula into this thread. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: GUEST Date: 02 Feb 05 - 10:40 PM One is left handed the other right? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Cluin Date: 02 Feb 05 - 11:35 PM The Brutal Beating of Bert Bert and Ernie Call it Quits The Truth About Bert A Nightmare on Sesame Street |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Don Firth Date: 02 Feb 05 - 11:53 PM Ernie and Dobie Gillis's father were played by Frank Faylen. Don Firth |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Little Hawk Date: 03 Feb 05 - 01:44 AM This thread has exceeded my expectations. It certainly offers a refreshing alternative to raging on about the Democrats and Republicans, Bush and Iraq, Christian fundamentalism, and that kind of thing. It's tacky, bizarre, sometimes horrifying. I'm surprised that William Shatner hasn't come into it yet. Oops. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Cluin Date: 03 Feb 05 - 01:58 AM Bert & Ernie share a hobby. *Warning... dirty picture* |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Peace Date: 03 Feb 05 - 04:31 AM Thans for the warning Cluin. Whew. I only looked at the Bert and Ernie photo. brucie |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Crystal Date: 03 Feb 05 - 05:44 AM Bert and Ernie used to terrify me! So did Big Bird, far to scary for my little mind to take. On a related note Barney is EVIL!!!! |

Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Little Hawk Date: 03 Feb 05 - 10:52 PM Big Bird truly was a mind-numbing sight for a small child to have to deal with. And what about Mr Snuffaluffagus? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: PoppaGator Date: 04 Feb 05 - 12:56 AM Forget Bert & Ernie, forget the Teletubbies ~ have you heard the latest? The fundamentalist/neoconservative crowd is now crusading against Spongebob Squarepants. He (it?) is apparently part of the Great Homo Conspiracy now. The cartoon character is featured in a recent video production promoting "diversity," which suggests that schoolchildren respect all their classmates and their families, and try to get along with them. This, we are told, is highly dangerous because the unspoken subtext suggests that gay people (even ~ gasp ~ gay parents) might be recognized as members of "families," and might even be allowed to coexist with the rest of us. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Clinton Hammond Date: 04 Feb 05 - 01:19 AM LH... I don't wanna be pedantic here, but his name is "Snuffleupagus" |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Crystal Date: 04 Feb 05 - 04:16 AM Snuffleupagus WWWWWWGGGGHHHHH THE TRAUMA!!!!!!! It was scary on TV, it was even scarier in the magazine, the artist managed to make every character look satanic. I didn't like Bagpuss either, Professor Yaffle was creepy! |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: GUEST,smiler Date: 04 Feb 05 - 04:24 PM I keyed in bert ernie sesame street gay - on google. There were 10,600 hits. There's no smoke without fire. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 04 Feb 05 - 04:39 PM Yeah, but if you narrow it down to "Bert and Ernie are gay" you only get 362 (English language) hits. And you get none at all for "Bert and Ernie suck dicks". I must admit I didn't even try "Bert and Ernie take a bone up the ass". |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Don Firth Date: 04 Feb 05 - 05:02 PM To hell with John Wayne! SpongeBob SquarePants and Red Green are my role models! Don Firth |

Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: GUEST,Bert Date: 04 Feb 05 - 10:33 PM Ernie is a smarmy, hateful little bastard. I hope he meets a truly miserable end. I went through hell working with him all these years on Sesame Street. No fate is too grisly or disgusting for the likes of Ernie. Die, Ernie, Die!!! - Bert p.s. Take your rubber ducky and shove it! |

Do me a favor and close the window! The sound of you two polishing each other's felt all night makes me wanna yak into my toejam collection. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ernie & Bert - the relationship! From: Little Hawk Date: 06 Feb 05 - 12:26 AM Let's face it. Sesame Street is a very odd show with a very twisted cast. |
