Subject: BS: A so-called 'green' Walmart From: dianavan Date: 06 Feb 05 - 10:47 PM Earlier I had boasted that Vancouver had defeated Wal-Mart when they tried to open a store on Marine Drive. Not quite. They are back with a vengeance. The new building proposal includes tree lined boulevards and a windmill! Of course it does nothing to address the increased traffic or the detrimental effect on local businesses. This is scary! These guys are stubborn. |

Subject: RE: BS: A so-called 'green' Walmart From: Teresa Date: 07 Feb 05 - 01:54 AM There is one consolation, albeit a smallish one. But important. I bet every employee in a Canadian Wal-Mart will have health care. At least Wal-Mart can't manipulate that. teresa |

Subject: RE: BS: A so-called 'green' Walmart From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 07 Feb 05 - 02:15 AM Sorry, but I just don't buy the "Mom and Pop stores being pushed out of business by Walmart" line. The Mom and Pop store as a source for basic necessities has been extinct in most locales for over thirty years. They were driven out of business by grocery supermarkets like Albertsons and Safeway, mall anchor stores like Penneys and Dillards, discount stores like K-Mart and Target, and pharmacy chains like Walgreens and CVS. It's those stores whose customers Walmart is drawing away, not Mom and Pop. Moms and Pops are running gourmet shops, designer boutiques, consignment stores and the like and Walmart is taking 0% of their business away. If you want to talk about Mom and Pop stores being driven out of business, don't look at Walmart. Look at the big "home center" stores like Home Depot and Lowe's. Every time one of them goes in, several independent hardware stores and lumberyards in the area go under. |

Subject: RE: BS: A so-called 'green' Walmart From: Mooh Date: 07 Feb 05 - 10:31 AM We've been over this topic before and I bet we won't resolve the issues this time either. Either way those giant stores make me a little nervous. I don't have much cause to visit such places but locally I believe they've (Walmart and Cdn Tire) had a negative affect on the small bait & tackle shops. Hope they don't start teaching music lessons from them or I'm doomed. Peace, Mooh. |

Subject: RE: BS: A so-called 'green' Walmart From: Stilly River Sage Date: 07 Feb 05 - 11:00 AM It's a myth that Walmart offers lower prices. When the competition is gone (wiped out) then the prices are no lower than what anyone else in the marketplace in other stores would offer. They're only that low in order to drive out the competition. Their work conditions are poor and discriminatory. And there is a great sucking sound at the doorway--your IQ drops about 15 points just by entering the place. Service stinks (as in--non-existent) as Walmart promotes the Lowest Common Denominator. Walmart seems to attract the non-discriminating customer, who thinks it's a great place and who doesn't do any comparison shopping. There are many far better places than Walmart to shop, and lots of places with shorter lines. And I go out of my way to support those other businesses. What's odd is that the Waltons don't run Sam's Club the same way. It's a much more reasonable place to shop. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: A so-called 'green' Walmart From: Kaleea Date: 08 Feb 05 - 03:47 AM wallyworld is #5 on the list of China's biggest exporters. \ when wallyworld moves into smaller towns with no malls, no safeways, no albertsons, etc, the local stores cannot compete with the ad prices because wallyworld has a practice of forcing megacorporations to LOWER their prices-to wallyworld only-every year, year after year. They have used illegal practices to force American manufacturing companies out of business. I have personally seen local small businesses run out of business in at least 3 US regions where I have lived. It is standard procedure. This has been examined & proved by class action lawsuits. Lawsuits plural. wallyworld gets fined. & slapped on the wrist. boohoo. Ever see any of this on business shows like Frontline? It is discussed often. Go ahead & pay no attention. Be sure to complain about the folks in the USA who don't have a job. & shoddy products. & how everything is made in China these days. & sweatshops where children work. & how "made in the USA" is a thing of the past. things that make you go, "hhhhhmmmmmmmmm . . ." |
