Subject: RE: BS: Dumb Animals*Which don't make a noise? From: Jeri Date: 15 Feb 05 - 08:50 PM Basenjis don't bark - they scream. Well, it's more like a howl unless they're really upset. Moths and butterflies probably make little flapping noises, Anything slimy will probably be silent when moving. I know I've never once heard a slug. I don't think most shellfish make very much noise. |

Like I ain't never heard heard a roach scream "genocide" when I give him the blast o' Raid, but maybe roaches ain't on a human fequency??? That is possible... Maybe they is smarter than humans and sit 'round, okay not sit, but ever roaches do that is like sittin', discussin' existentalism and theories of relativity... Yeah, I'm sure worms don't have much to say... But maybe they do??? Nevermind... Bobert |
Subject: RE: BS: Dumb Animals*Which don't make a noise? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 15 Feb 05 - 09:30 PM Define "noise." Do they have a voice? Do they make a sound when they move (walking, scrabbling across the rocky beach, climbing, etc.)? FWIW: I haven't heard many noisy spiders. We have some geckos on the house every year I've never heard (except for their toenails on the window screens), neither have I heard a peep from the snakes in the yard. Ants are very quiet. I have, however, camped in Arkansas in the summer and had such a racket of insect joy around me in the night that I could hardly hear myself think and had to shout to be heard over it. So not all insects and bugs are quiet! (And for the non-English majors on the list, I think that thread title should say *that don't make a noise, not *which don't make a noise. "Which hunting" is a favorite English major passtime. :) SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Dumb Animals*Which don't make a noise? From: Metchosin Date: 16 Feb 05 - 02:21 AM Slugs....slugs don't make a sound. Newts and salamanders are rather quiet too. You have to make "burummm...burrummm" noises for them yourself, when pretending they are toy cars and trucks. Turtles however can scream, especially when they hit the tarmack after falling from a three story bacony. Of course it could just be the sound of the wind being knocked out of 'em. |

Subject: RE: BS: Dumb Animals*Which don't make a noise? From: JohnInKansas Date: 16 Feb 05 - 06:07 PM I can attest that at least some turtles can make a rather loud "hiss" (like a snake?). I guess it's an "unvoiced" sound, so perhaps they don't have vocal chords or other "resonant" structures. Our local "snappers," especially the "leather back" kind, can get pretty agitated if you catch them where they can't get to the pond. Cockroaches can make a number of "clicks" that are audible. In a seriously infested location I've heard them from as much as 30 yards away - from outside the house - obviously talking to each other. (Occupants had been away for a couple of weeks, and didn't clean up before leaving. Daughter was house-watching and called for help because the noise scared her and she was afraid to look inside.) If rude urban legends are permitted, there's the old joke about the French lover with the punchline: "But I didn't know she was dead, I thought she was just American." (sorry about that) John |

Subject: RE: BS: Dumb Animals*Which don't make a noise? From: Nigel Parsons Date: 17 Feb 05 - 01:59 PM Turtles aren't mute: The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land; (Song of Solomon 2:12 [King James version]) I also remember the last few lines of a poem about the giraffe, "Its neck is found to check all sound which wanes e'er clear it gains the ear and so he's mute I'll follow suit" I tried a quick Google, but couldn't find the whole poem. Laid out as above, with the appearance of a giraffe's neck CHEERS Nigel |
Subject: RE: BS: Dumb Animals*Which don't make a noise? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 17 Feb 05 - 02:14 PM Yeah, but that's a poetical reference to the turtledove, so that doesn't serve as evidence. Snapping turtles communicate real well with hissing and snapping their sharp jaws. And I ask again about "voice." Having a voice (making yourself understood) doesn't require making a sound. We can observe many "silent" creatures and make accurate deductions regarding what they want us to know ("don't step on me" "feed me" etc.) SRS |
