Subject: RE: Review: Follow that with your sea lions.... From: YorkshireYankee Date: 26 Feb 05 - 11:57 PM I really enjoyed it too – particularly since I didn't move to the UK until 1998-ish; it filled in a number of the (many) gaps in my knowledge of the UK folk scene in the 60s & 70s. I especially appreciated a chance to hear clips of/anecdotes about Tony Capstick; as I live in Sheffield now, I've heard his name mentioned frequently, but not had much idea of who he was – not to mention how brilliant he was. My only complaint is that I wish the programme had been a bit more positive about folk music itself. The general attitude seemed to reinforce the already (sadly) prevalent notions that folkies/folk music are/is a bit bizarre and/or boring and take themselves too seriously – and, therefore, are/is not worth taking very seriously. In spite of that, I found it an extremely interesting and entertaining programme. Do try to listen to it while it's still available (not sure how long that will be!). |

From: The Borchester Echo Date: 28 Feb 05 - 09:03 AM "I wish the programme had been a bit more positive about folk music" What it actually said that the "comedians" were the only good thing to come out of the folk clubs (which, fortunately, no longer existed.) I found the programme (which I heard only because I was waiting for Andy Kershaw to start) totally embarrassing and misleading. Little wonder that the population of England as a whole has such a low and warped conception of their own cultural heritage. |
