It has occurred to me upon reading recent threads that in order to stimulate a greater interest in folk music we need to feed some impressive PR to the general audience.

For instance:

"Marvel at this performance of The Ballad of Lady Margaret and the Chook, 783 verses in total, and provided for your listening pleasure on 3 CD's."

"The world's longest song title is a Scottish folk tune - Pipe Major Joe Offer's Tribute to the 27th Scottish Dragons On the Occasion of the Centenary of the Ill-Fated Battle of Pakenham Upper as performed at the Edinburgh Tattoo in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and ... Part 2."

"Of course the world's most sung song is not White Christmas, or Happy Birthday, but of course The Wild Rover - it's just that a lot of people don't recall the event later on."

"The world's oldest punk song is a Child Ballad, but there is thin veneer of subterfuge in the sharp story line surrounding a sailor expressing his desire to spend some quality time with a local lady."

Yes to be successful folk music must be touted as the largest, the longest, the most popular, the sharpest and forever useful - just like advertising steak knives really.

TGIF
John

The words to the Wild Rover go-

Will I play the Wild rover, no never no more.

But they do......................

However, it IS true what they say - doesn't matter what the size is, it's what you do with it that counts! And like so much else, while folk music by oneself is perfectly alright, it's soooo much better when their others involved!

Amazing the number of places you manage to squeeze in that song, Bert. Must fit.

Barbara,

I know, I'm BAD when it comes to plugging one of my songs.

Can't resist posting this surreal Jay Leno sequence:

"What is it with those knives they sell that can cut everything? For one thing, if you got one what would you keep it in? Have you also noticed how if you buy one of these knives that cut everything, they will send you a second one for free. Why? You already have one that will cut everything! Maybe the second knife is to cut the first one!!"

Yours, Peter T.

Re message above from "the Shambles" (4 Dec) the 'Texas Rangers' goes 'and now my song is ended, I think I've sung enough'

but it goes on...

and what about the Good Ship Calabar "listen to my song, it's only 40 verses, I'll not detain yous long"

not that I know what this all has to do with the first message on this thread?

Long as we're pursuing superlatives (or at least extremes), how's this for "world's shortest shipwreck ballad", which Holly Tannen attributed to the late Peter Bellamy when she posted it in another music list...

"The gallant frigate Amphitrite
Got sunk off Plymouth Sound."

The End

And The Wild Rover has the longest sequence of consecutive negatives known in the English language.

"No nay never no nay never no..."

Go ahead, prove me wrong. Make my day.

ENGLISH PROFESSOR: "One of the interesting characteristics of English as opposed to other languages is that while it has double negatives that mean a positive, it does not use double positives to mean a negative.

STUDENT: "Yeah, right."

Yeah, yeah, Peter.

We can plug that short song as "for the busy executive who still wants to be a folkie.
