Subject: BS: Blue Clicky Things....
From: Bobert
Date: 09 Mar 05 - 11:30 PM

Well, I might sound like an ol' stick-in-the-mud but... I'd rather read someone's ideas than a blue clicky thing... Hey, if you wanta read something and give a danged book report on it... fine! But it seems that folks can'r just say much of anything without havin' their little Linus security "blue clicky" blanket in tow.... Little Hawk being the exception...

And this ain't got nuthin' to do with the fact that I ain't figured out how to do these things but more because folks is just litterin' the joint with these things...

Seems to water down the real thought processes here... You know, like my blue clicky thing can beat up yours... Seems kinda lazy...

I'd rather hear (read) the story in yer words...

Now I ain't sayin' that there ain't never a time when these things is appropriate but, heck, not on danged near every other post...

Nevermind...

Cranky Bobert

Well, Bobert, those blue clicky things are my fault, I guess. People who can't think their own thoughts were copy-pasting huge tomes of newspaper articles and propaganda, things that were often available at hundreds of places on the Internet - so, the edict went out: if it's non-music information and it's more than a screenful of words, post a summary in your own words or an excerpt, plus a link. Well, the tongue-tied people couldn't post either a summary or an excerpt, so they started having blue-clicky discussions.

And then other people got the impression the edict applied to music information, and they started posting blue clickys to lyrics and all sorts of information that is now no longer available, so we have a bunch of dead links.

But from what you said, Bobert, people are going to think you're dying to read every word of their newspapers, and they'll start more of those aggravating copy-paste debates. You did emphasize that you wanted to hear what people had to say in their own words, didn't you?

Well Bobert, I don't realy understand what you are saying. In some instances, I thik it would be lazy not to give a link. They can be useful in all sorts of ways.

Sometimes for example we might want to provide an article that supports our thoughts. Quoting an extract and providing a link is actually harder work than copy/pasting the whole article. It's also easier on most people as those that just want to get the gist can and those interested in following up on the whole story have an oppertunity to do so.

Another example, which I'll give as an example would be Wolfgang (I think) giving a link in the IRA thread. I read the first post and wasn't sure what the comments were based on. That someone had bothered to search and find a newspaper article on the subject to help us all understand what was being talked about is not lazy. It took effort.

Then there are things like informing others of another website sort of like here is a Stephen Foster site I enjoy.

Like just about anything in life, they can be over used and have problems (eg a site or page may move of dissapear) but overall, I think hyperlinks are a blessing, not a curse.

Oh and another point Bobert is that I for one have more faith in articles from known sources than I do in thoughts of most (including myself it the boot was on the other foot). Something like the "IRA" link substantiates a story for me as a reader. Without it, as far as I'm concerned, it could all be "Mudcat hearsay".

Bobert,

You're just projecting your "knowledge envy" onto a diffent subject. If you had anywhere on the 'net to go to add substance to your arguments I'm sure you'd have figured out a way to blickify.

Instead, every time you see a blicky it makes you feel inadequate because others actually have sources for their BS.

What you need is a Blog that you could link to so that you too could have a site full of your theories to blickify to. Your reasoning would always be circular, but when has that stopped a good mudcat discussion?

Imagine a cocktail party at which several lively discussions are taking place. Now, imagine that each of the party attendees has a wheelbarrow with him and each wheelbarrow is filled with newspaper clippings. When someone wishes to make a point in the discussion, he digs a newspaper clipping out of the wheelbarrow and has everyone read it. Then, someone else in the group says, "Yes, but take a look at this!" and passes around another clipping.

Absurd, isn't it. Well, it's exactly how the "mode of discourse" in some threads around here strikes me. Reading a brief news article is one thing, but being handed a ten-page article is another. I have neither the time nor the inclination to read lengthy tomes on subjects about which a I care little. If you want to express your opinion to me, say it in a reasonably well-written paragraph. Then, provide a link to a longer article if you want, but understand that I may not have the time to read it and don't treat me like an idiot if I don't.

Bobert, get yourself Mozilla's Firefox browser, and then you won't be so intimidated by the blue clickies because you can open them up in a new tab and have all of your tabs nicely arranged along the top of the page. Then you can click from one to the other at lightenting speed.

The blue clickies are absolutely fantastic. If I want to share a mudcat tidbit out in the real world, such as, e.g., Atlantis was recently discovered, or that American soldiers are shooting any Iraqis without purple ink on their fingers, or that English ducks are gay necrophiliacs, or that three quarters of all public universities are going to close in the next four years, or that police in Ohio videotaped aliens, there is no way I am going to bring that up in a conversation to the ineveitable "Where did you hear that?" and have to respond "Um, well, this guy on the internet said."

Well, let it go on record that I like the blue clickies. In a serious discussion (should I encounter one), I regard them like footnotes or a citation of sources. Just like footnotes, you don't have to read them, but if you want to dig into the matter further, they allow you to do so. I've learned a lot from blue clickes.

Also, they can make a point graphically (literally).

Keep 'em comin'!

Well, seems I goy a couple votes, anyway... 'Er half votes... Nah, it ain't clicker envy 'cause I doubt I would use 'um much if I kndew how to do 'em...

I think Don and BeeDubyaEll unnerstand the point I was trying to make and that is to make your argument or observation and then use the blue clicky thing... That's kind what I had in mind... I just don't have the time a lot of folk here have and I don't want to read 15 pages of stuff when someone can gleen the critiacl information out and rephrase it...

Now someone is going to come along and say that 'ol Bobert is lazy. Well, that ain't true at all. I'm a danged workoholic if anything and still have time to several articles evey day in the Wsahington Post, listen to Democracy Now, listen to an hour or so of C-SPAN radio on the way home from work so it ain't like I ain't keepin' up...

But I reckon what I might not have made clear last night in my "Cranky Bobert" mood was that it ain't the blue clicky things that bug me but the fact that there are quite a few folks who, IMHO, overuse them and don't spend enough time sharing their *own* thoughts...

Nevermind. I prolly shouldn't have said a thing (no, danged it, not a blue clicky thing) about it...

I kinda see Bobert's point in a way. If someone just posts a blue clicky, I rarely click on it. Those who provide them have a point in that they are trying to find supporting information to prove their point. Just because it is in print on the Internet, however, is not proof that it is factual. Probably a point of view on any subject can be supported by someone's website somewhere on the net.

For those who find them helpful, so be it. I sort of like to hear someone's individual opinion on a given subject, though, whether or not I agree with it. I doubt information contained in a blue clicky changes minds much.

I usually like clickies, especially those linked to pictures, sound clips, artists' websites, etc.

When the link is to a political essay, newspaper column, etc., I don't feel obligated to read the whole thing unless I'm really interested.

I agree with Bobert that "messages" consisting of nothing but a link to someone else's expression of your viewpoint are kind of obnoxious. But when a person states their position and also provides a link to some kind of supporting evidence or expert testimony, that's OK with me. (Of course, I still reserve the right not to read all the way down to the end.)

For a while, I was unable to make "blue clickies" that worked. My problem was that I always failed to include the full URL, including "http://," and I think that's the same problem most folks have with the process. If you start with the "www" it won't work. Just go to the site you want to want to link to, and copy the entire address line while the page is visible in your browser. Then paste it into the "URL" field of the Blickifier, and the rest is automatic.

Oh yeah, one more thing ~ I like you too, CarolC...

LOL

gorsck... awww, shucks....

I like you guys too!

Bobert, the only picture of myself I've put in this thread is in my 10 Mar 05 - 12:05 AM post. The other picture being spoken of is a theoretical picture, and so far there is only speculation as to whether or not it exists. Kind of like bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster. If you spot it though, let us know, ok?

Sometimes a clicky is about all that's needed, and doesn't necessarily mean the person posting it doesn't have anything to say. Just, "Hey, this is interesting (at least I think so). Have a look!"

And lo! it might just be interesting.

Whadayamean, CarolC? I mean, yer the one standin' in top the the porta John... I think you might have more questions to answer about the piccure than poor ol' me... I've been in a few of 'um in my time but never climbed up on top of one... Now if you were up there with the accordian it might, though prolly not, make sense...

And as fir the dude in other one??? Of course he's wavin'..,. Ican see that. Does he play the accordian as well? If so, no response is required...

Awww, jus funnin'...

... but what's ya doing up there?

Bobert

Why, that's the famous McGill Man on the back of Rombos Restaurant in Orillia, Ontario, Bobert. I just wanted an opportunity to be seen in a picture with him, what with his being so famous and all.

He disappeared a couple of years ago. He was last seen (from what I heard, anyway), being carried off by a hoard of the infamous Orillia "Osama bin Lookalikes", and he's never been seen or heard from again. It's the truth. You can ask Little Hawk.

I'm without clue.

I suppose that theoretical picture doesn't exist because I was not available to set up the equipment....otherwise, I'm sure she'd have seen it as a golden opportunity.

how else am I going to show a picure of Mr Red without a blickie? Or alert people to resources &/or events in my area without boring people who don't want to wade through the stuff until they are ready?

Long live the blickie. They are parenthetical, an aside, an addendum, illustrative without being too wordy ......... if you see what I mean.

I can only assume some of you have never supported the Café by purchasing a calendar.

I'd say the real problem here is that beedubyaell thinks he is at a cocktail party, Bobert agrees with him, and freda is leaning both ways.

So why don't y'all just CHILL!

And Bobert, once you and beedubyaell sober up from your too many martinis at the cocktail party hangover, I'll tell ya how to save that blue clickety clack (don't talk back) as a background for your desktop.

Then everytime yer shorts in a blickety bundle, you can click on yer desktop and go "Aaaaaaaahhhhhh!"

All right, let's just say that that supporting the Café through cash donations, the auction, purchasing from vendors who donate a portion of sales, and purchasing Café items like, CD's, t-shirts and calendars is worthy and needed. I have participated in each and am richer for it.

BTW, I haven't heard of any fund raising drives since I got back on line last fall.

I hope all the members and guests realize this site is non-profit and we owe this all to Max and his volunteers AND the members and guests who support their efforts.

And don't forget, no amount of support is too small.

Was there a 2005 calendar made? I don't remember it.

Mind you, we managed to acquire 5 calendars this year, without even trying!
