Well, when I see the thread about the one in Northern Ireland I always think it's this one. Where Frank and Jesse and Clell Miller and the Daltons tried and failed. September 7, 1876.

Lets have some PROOF that the Daltons did it before you start making accusations?
Take my word, the CIA did it to discredit them.

Keith.

Well, I myself don't have direct proof, since they were all dead before I was born. But Charlie Pitts was shot dead and the Youngers wounded and eventually sentenced to prison in Stillwater. Jesse and Frank James were wounded but managed to escape back to Missouri.

The Daltons weren't involved in this one -- I was confusing them with the Youngers. The Daltons had their own come-uppance in Coffeyville, Kansas in 1892, when of the five would-be robbers who entered the bank only Grat Dalton survived (wounded) to be imprisoned.

But hey! The James, Dalton, and Younger families were all related!

The Daltons ? Northfield ?

The Daltons were involved in a disastrous bank raid at Coffeyville, Kansas in 1892. Click here for some contemporary news reports.

The famous Northfield, Minnesota raid was in 1876. Some of the Dalton gang were barely toddlers in that year.

The James Boys and the Youngers were more murderous, drug-crazed war veterans.

Did you read the other thread? I said the same thing there and posted a few links. I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in that connection!

Here's my other post:

      Meself Alone said:
"But gee, "Northern Bank Raid" sounds like it could be a great folk song...."

Joe Offer probably intended his remark as a light-hearted comment in an otherwise serious discussion but it is worth remembering that those responsible for the robbery and kidnapping made it clear that they were prepared to kill those taken hostage.

Can you imagine anyone in this forum suggesting that the exploits of kidnappers in Iraq might make "a great folk song"? Just as we abhor "Muslim" terrorists, shouldn't we abhor "Christian" terrorists too?

Can you imagine something as big as ANY of these events not making it into song? The point of view is a separate issue, but of course this is the material of song.

I agree with Joe, it sounds like a song. For those of us on this side of the pond, the Northern Ireland bank robbery isn't what immediately comes to mind under this thread name.

Jesse James made his own raid on a northern bank in 1876 that caused a bit of a stir here. Historians are still sorting out what all happened during Jessie's career.

A search of the DT comes up with the following:

    The Digitrad Results

0.8510 - JESSE JAMES (I WONDER WHERE MY POOR OLD JESSE'S GONE)
0.8510 - BAND OF JESSE JAMES
    0.8351 - JESSE JAMES (3)
    0.8351 - JESSE JAMES
    0.8169 - ONE DIME BLUES
0.7967 - TRUE BALLAD OF JESSE JAMES
    0.7967 - RALEIGH AND SPENCER
    0.7967 - BEAR CREEK BLUES
    0.7742 - LONNIGAN'S WIDOW
    0.7742 - LONE ROCK SONG
    0.7742 - JESUS CHRIST
    0.7742 - J.B. MARCUM
    0.7742 - INFLUENZA
    0.7742 - BLUE WATER LINE
    0.7742 - BELLE STARR

    Just so you know.

BTW--if you want to read an absolutely marvelous novel, look for Ron Hansen's The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. It's a great piece of work, and will surprise you.

The Waltons did it?!?!?!?! I though they were that nice family who lived up in the mountains and always said goodnight to each other.

Just goes to show how wrong you can be.

Incidentaly, as a Brit I know little about US history but one thing I recently found out on my tour of Illinios and Arkansas that Jesse James was in prison at the same time and in the same jail as Joseph Smith of Mormon fame! Perhaps BOTH the Northern and Northfield bank raids were related in some way to religious extreemists:-)

Cheers

DtG

Well...Jesse Woodson James was born September 5, 1847 and Joseph Smith and his brother, Hyrum were killed in Carthage, Illinois on June 27, 1844. But ol' Jesse, he alluz was a bad 'un....

Ahhhhh - So the prison tale was a bit like the numerous Jesse James caves and hideouts all over Illinois? Some rumours may be a bit truer than others? ;-)

Actually, DtG, I'm from about 60 miles south of Nauvoo and I've been there many times (no, I'm not LDS). My sister was the head of the public library in Carthage, back years ago, and I've visited several of the James sites.

I don't remember ANY credible evidence that Jesse James ever visited Illinois (although it could very well have happened). He did live in Kentucky for a while, and I think that he robbed a train or something in Iowa. After the Northfield raid it's thought that he and Frank holed up in Nebraska for a while, but if someone from Montana wants to sell you something ol' Jess' left with at their great-granddaddy's ranch I'd take a long, hard look at it.

(Remember too that Bat Masterson, after he became a sports writer in New York City, would buy beat-up revolvers at a pawnshop, cut a few notches in the handle, and give them to his fans as the "real" guns he used in the Old West.)

In fairness to the good people of Illinois I should point out that the various JJ sites were all in the southern bit of Illinois, much nearer to Missouri and Kentucky than the state capital! My cousin and his wife, from Alton, were also of the same opinion as Rapaire.

Much like our places where Robin Hood or Little John robbed people, are buried or ran off with next doors cat...

:D

When dealing with folks around or west of the Mississippi it's a good idea to remember that one of Vance Randolph's classic books on folklore is entitled We Always Lie To Strangers.
