Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hurricane of reels From: Jim Dixon Date: 09 Apr 05 - 02:30 PM Cathal McConnell performs THE HURRICANE OF REELS on his album "Long Expectant Comes at Last," Compass CD #4287, 2000. I was able to transcribe this from a sound sample. I have italicized the words that I can confirm are titles of tunes. Tim Moloney took the ... goods; it was a heavy load, Tread (?) them out to Jenny's Chickens goin' West along the Road The merry Maids of Mitchellstown are missin' from the floor. They'll be in The New Mown Meadows with The Bucks of Oranmore. |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE HURRICANE OF REELS (Paddy Tunney) From: Margaret V Date: 11 Apr 05 - 08:57 PM Here you go. Enjoy! Margaret THE HURRICANE OF REELS Copyright Paddy Tunney, all rights reserved. I rolled with Roarin' Mary and I cuddled Bonnie Kate, I got drunk with Bonnie Annie, scared The Pigeon off the Gate, After all these comely maidens with whom I did parade, I most often took my chances with the darlin' Sligo Maid. Dithery-um..... Tim Moloney took The Bag o' Spuds, it was heavy load, Fed them out to Jenny's Chickens goin' West Along the Road. The Merry Maids of Mitchellstown are missin' from the floor, They'll be in The New Mown Meadows with The Bucks of Oranmore. Dithery-eye... Lord MacDonald and Lord Gordon swing the Lasses from Fermoy, But sure Drowsie Maggie told me that they were The Soldier's Joy. I met with Tim Moloney, he was feelin' mighty proud, As the hielan' done the highland with the darlin' Miss McLeod. Dithery-um... I met The Jolly Tinker, he was singin' like a thrush, And The Lark was in the Mornin' and The Bird was in the Bush. After all my great adventures with these maidens great and small, I settled down and married to The Girl From Donegal. Die-dle dithery... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hurricane of Reels (Cathal McConnell) From: Margaret V Date: 11 Apr 05 - 09:45 PM Hi harpgirl, how are you? No, I don't have a CD yet. Sorry to be such a slacker. Nor do I have the means to provide the tune to this song, but I'd suggest just going ahead and getting the Cathal McConnell album as it really lovely! By the way, I should have posted Cathal's liner note information for the song: "This song was composed by Paddy Tunney from Muleek, Co. Fermanagh. For years I didn't know the proper title and simply referred to it as 'the song about the tunes.' It's a clever wordplay on the titles of some well known reels. The last reel mentioned in each verse is lilted as the chorus." Margaret |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hurricane of Reels (Cathal McConnell) From: GUEST,aiberdeen Date: 12 Apr 05 - 09:52 AM The tune to which the song is sung is very close to the reel "Bonnie Kate". "The Comely Maidens" [ Verse 1 ]is also a reel title, and possibly also "A Heavy Load" [Verse 2 ]. |
