Another great idea from our friends at the Information Awareness Office. (I feel SO secure.)

IPTO's Mission

DARPA's IPTO will create a new generation of computational and information systems that possess capabilities far beyond those of current systems. These cognitive systems - systems that know what they're doing -

Cognitive Systems Conference
        will be able to reason, using substantial amounts of appropriately represented knowledge;
        will learn from their experiences and improve their performance over time;
        will be capable of explaining themselves and taking naturally expressed direction from humans;
        will be aware of themselves and able to reflect on their own behavior; and
        will be able to respond robustly to surprises, in a very general way.

Walk your dog, breed your dog, charge you for the service and then tax you for it. Gotta love it. Nice work if you can get it.

Ahem. Seems I shouldn't have put the question mark in the thread title.

It's an interesting subject- and of course the technology is vulnerable to abuse and misuse. But really, as soon as we entered the robotic/computerized world we knew that this is where we're going. That won't change- except to become more so...

"Led by the visionary J.C.R. Licklider and his innovative successors in the Information Processing Techniques Office (IPTO), DARPA initiated work that ultimately put personal computers on millions of desktops and made the global Internet a reality. In fact, the original IPTO, which lasted from 1962 to 1985, was in large part responsible for establishing Computer Science as a field.

DARPA has recently re-energized IPTO (now the Information Processing Technology Office), and has rededicated its attention to modern Computer Science by looking both to its roots and to a dramatic vision of the future. Licklider imagined computers and humans working closely together in a form of symbiosis. The new, 21st century IPTO wants to realize this vision by giving computing systems unprecedented abilities to reason, to learn, to explain, and to reflect, in order to finally create systems able to cope robustly with unforeseen circumstances. IPTO's goal is to create a new generation of cognitive systems."

Not me. I mostly worry about tsunamis these days, since I live on a sand spit. mg

You can do a lot more about vulnerability to tsunamis than mankind can do about the next generations of computer technology.

what can I do? Get a wet suit and keep it under my bed like some do here? I very much doubt we would make it out. I am hesitating over buying a house here that I can qualify for...I guess it wouldn't matter if the tsunami got me, but if it didn't get me and got the house I would probably not be covered by insurance.... mg
