Subject: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: Mark Cohen Date: 17 Apr 05 - 05:38 AM After 11 years in Hawaii, I'm moving back to the Mainland. The chief reason is to be closer to my 10-year-old daughter. I'll be in Santa Clara, next to San Jose in the South Bay area, so my daughter will be a one-hour flight or a five-hour drive away. A big side benefit, of course is that I'll be able to connect again with all my Bay Area and Northern California music friends, including the ones I re-met at Harmony after being away for 14 years, as well as folks like Joe Offer, and new friends Laura Sandage and Katie Henry, two phenomenal songwriters and musicians from Davis who have teamed up with sometime Mudcatter Ray Frank (DADGBE) in a trio that is sure to make waves. There are things I'll miss about Hawaii, like swimming with dolphins, and the view of the ocean from my office window (my new office doesn't even have a window, let alone a view), but this feels like a good move at a good time. Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: Deckman Date: 17 Apr 05 - 06:43 AM Mark, that's very good news. Any chance you'll be getting back up to the Seattle again, maybe for a song circle or two? It's been years since we shared a song. Bob(deckman)Nelson |

Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: Mark Cohen Date: 17 Apr 05 - 05:14 PM Absolutely right, kat, I know where I'll be going for vacation! Kendall, you still have time--I won't be leaving till mid-June. (Now what's your excuse?) And yes, I do hope to get back to Seattle, and the Song Circle, at some time. My oldest and best friend lives in Bellingham, and I still have friends in Seattle. The only problem is, now I won't have any excuse for NOT visiting everybody. Oh, well... Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: Stilly River Sage Date: 17 Apr 05 - 10:51 PM Mark, It sounds like Hawaii was a great place to live, but your daughter will benefit immeasurably from your presence nearby. I'm living in Texas now so my kids can be near their dad. They're great kids, and I know that the ability to see him every day has been the best choice for them. I'd love for them to live in Washington State with me, but I can't make that happen now without causing more harm than good. Good luck with the move. Maggie (SRS) |

Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: Ebbie Date: 18 Apr 05 - 12:15 PM Mark, as you probably know Katie Henry is from Juneau - in fact, she is in town here at the moment for the Alaska Folk Festival, which just ended last night. She is from a thoroughly musical family. Her dad, Pat, is one of our favorite bluesmen and her brother Hiram fairly recently joined in in his own right. Katie came by her songwriting abilities fairly- Pat is a prolific, topical writer with an inimitable delivery. Reminds me of Dave Van Ronk. Welcome back to the Mainland. May your move be a happy one in overwhelming ways. |

Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: M.Ted Date: 18 Apr 05 - 08:57 PM More Hawaiians live in California than in Hawaii---or so I am told. Welcome back to the mainland--I hope this increases the chances we'll run in to each other! |
Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: DougR Date: 19 Apr 05 - 01:27 AM Mark: it sounds to me as though you are making a positive move. I love Hawaii, but I really doubt I would want to live there. Being near your daughter will bring you rewards way beyond any other that Hawaii can offer I think. Good luck. DougR |
Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: Mark Cohen Date: 19 Apr 05 - 02:52 AM Ebbie, did you get to meet/hear Katie's friend Laura while she was there? One hell of a songwriter, she is. There's still time, Alison! One of my big regrets is that I never made it to Oz or NZ while I was living in Hawaii. (I know...there's still time!) This seems to be an appropriate time to reprise one of the few songs (well, it's a parody, pace Mary Garvey) I've written recently: HOW CAN I KEEP FROM MOVING ©2003 Mark Cohen (to the tune of "How Can I Keep From Singing") My life flows on in endless rows Of cardboard boxes standing The moving men will stop and rest Upon the seventh landing The waiting van, the bags, the crates Somehow I find them soothing I'm at my best when wrapping plates How can I keep from moving? What though the newsprint and the tape Are strewn across the kitchen What though the thirty crates of books Have movers all a-bitchin' A box well-packed makes me most calm While tape to me is clinging I hear the call of towns unknown How can I keep from moving? While others tremble, sick with fear At thoughts of packing cartons While friends all moan, I nod and smile And neatly fold the curtains Another house will soon be home But joy that needs no proving Is mine whenever movers come How can I keep from moving? Aloha, Mark PS, This song is NOT about me, despite my extensive collection of return address labels. |
Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: Stilly River Sage Date: 19 Apr 05 - 10:28 AM Mark, I have a superstitious feeling, every time I order new address labels, that they're going to be obsolete before I barely get started using them. Even though I don't move as often as I used to, after the divorce in 1999 there have been a couple of moves that seemed to be right on the heels of ordering new labels. There have been a couple of times when I WANTED to move that I considered ordering labels to hasten the process. :) SRS |
Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: Ebbie Date: 19 Apr 05 - 12:24 PM Mark, if that is the Laura who used to be 'Laura Kemp' (I think it was), she is wonderful. Several years back - I think when they were still in college - she came to Juneau with Katie and they did a Folk Festival set. |
Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: GUEST,Melani Date: 19 Apr 05 - 06:06 PM Welcome back, Mark! I look forward to seeing you at the Hyde St. chantey sings. |
Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: catspaw49 Date: 19 Apr 05 - 06:56 PM Hi Doc! Well like others I'm sorry you're leaving Hawaii. But it's been all too obvious for many years how much you want to be with your daughter. I'm really happy this has come to fruition. Make sure you get in touch with Dave Swan. Our business, Lane, Fielding, Patterson, and Swan......Layabouts-At-Large and for Hire is really doing a booming business at doing nothing for other folks who are too busy to take the time to do nothing for themselves. Dave may require some help at some point as the west coast is filled with flakes who are more than willing to pay us to do all of their relaxing for them and Dave is scheduled really deep. Now back here in the east, Mick and I have things pretty well in hand but to be truthful it's Rick who has done most of the "work." Being dead and all, the fuckin' guy has almost no limit to the amounnt of relaxing he can do and his ability to multi-task is simply amazing.......almost unworldly! Anyway, Dave may give you a call as you might fit in with our corporate image. Welcome back!!!!!!!!! Spaw |
Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: Mark Cohen Date: 20 Apr 05 - 03:57 AM Sorry, 'Spaw, I just can't see myself expending the energy to help Dave. You guys are just going to have to dither on by yourselves. Ebbie, I don't know if Laura Sandage used to be Laura Kemp; I'll ask her. She's tall, thin, and has very long blond hair. Laura, Katie, and Ray Frank, a/k/a MudLark, will be opening for Bryan Bowers at a house concert in Davis on April 29. (I'm not sure if their name has any relationship to Mudcat and Lark in the Morning...) Look for their CD soon. Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: GUEST,Joe Offer Date: 21 Apr 05 - 03:20 AM Ebbie, I think Laura Sandage has always been Sandage - her husband's name is different. She writes some terrific songs - click here for one of them, and a link to another. Hey, she even wrote a song about ME, if you can believe that. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: Ebbie Date: 21 Apr 05 - 01:14 PM Those are great lyrics, Joe. So Laura S. is Laura Sandage? Does Katie ever come here, do you think? I'd love to see the lyrics of "your" song, Joe. |
Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: Mark Cohen Date: 22 Apr 05 - 04:24 AM Joe, Laura's song about you is a great song...and greatly deserved. Maybe you can get her to post it. On second thought, you're not likely to do that, self-effacing gentleman that you are. Maybe I'll ask her. As I recall, it's called "Just Joe." Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: Ebbie Date: 23 Apr 05 - 07:45 PM At last night's music, Katie dropped in with her dad. She was most pleased that Mark is coming to California for sure. I told her to drop in here when she gets a chance. She already knew about Mudcat, probably from Laura and Mark. She sang a couple of songs then went on to a party somewhere. She's going home Sunday. Mark, have you ever heard her dad, Pat? He is a lot of fun and a terrific topical songwriter. Everyone should hear his songs. One of my current favorites is 'Get Stuff', but there are lots of others. It's no wonder that Katie is so good! |
Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: GUEST,Skipy Date: 24 Apr 05 - 07:10 PM You need to tell air traffic control - rather dangerous for aircraft heading out there trying to land to find out, on finals that you have moved it! Skipy |

Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: Mark Cohen Date: 24 Apr 05 - 07:21 PM Here is info on the Bryan Bowers/Mudlark concert. ********* "To call Bryan Bowers' performance simply a 'concert' would be inadequate, if not inaccurate... (it) could better be described as an experience" --Desert News "...This man makes more music from an autoharp than you can imagine from a 12-string guitar and a harpsichord combined. He has more stage presence and charisma than any stage performer in recent memory." --Washington Times BRYAN BOWERS House Concert April 29, 2005 7:30pm 2222 Muir Woods Place, Davis Davis trio MudLark to open (Laura Sandage, Katie Henry and Ray Frank) Donation $15 adults, $8 children, with all proceeds going to the musicians Reservations recommended-- contact Ray at 530-756-7089 email concerts@muircommons.org Additional information about the musicians: Bryan Bowers has been a major presence on the North American folk and bluegrass music scene since the mid-1960's. People Magazine says: "Bowers is widely regarded as the leading virtuoso on the autoharp...Bowers also has distinct gifts as a singer and a songwriter." For over three decades, Bryan Bowers has been to the autoharp what Earl Scruggs was to the banjo. Almost single-handedly, he's resurrected the instrument from Carter Family antiquity and placed it in a contemporary but tradition-oriented setting. A virtually self-taught player, he created his own five-fingered technique that makes the instrument multi-dimensional. "Mr. Bowers has evolved a five-finger right-hand technique whereby he can keep rhythm, melody and three harmony lines interplaying simultaneously, like children weaving ribbons around a Maypole." (The Washington Times). But what is most amazing is that Bowers can take this quaint instrument and his rustic voice, forge them with his charismatic personality and create a beautiful, contemporary sound. He has five cd releases to date, full of both originals and classic folk songs. The recordings include collaborations with Sam Bush and The Seldom Scene. In 1993, he was inducted into the Autoharp Hall of Fame. MudLark is a newly-formed and already celebrated folk trio based in Davis. Members Laura Sandage, Ray Frank, and Katie Henry bring a collective wealth of musical experience and years of performance and recording projects to the group. They perform a vocally-rich and lyrically intense blend of traditional and original music accompanied by guitar, banjo, upright bass and various percussion tidbits. Ray Frank is known regionally as the guitarist of the contra dance band Stump Tail Dog, which has put out two lively and tuneful CDs. He is a master of sensitive accompaniment and a consummate showman. Katie Henry is an award-winning singer-songwriter who has performed across the country and is especially known for her solo cd, "Bears in the City," and her work with the Oregon-based band "Babes with Axes." Laura Sandage is a classically- trained vocalist and published poet-humorist whose songwriting ranges from heart-expanding to gut-busting. Her soon-to be-released debut CD, Bloom, includes extensive MudLark collaboration. This one is highly recommended. Thanks, and Happy Pesach to you, too, Guest! Yes, I'm looking forward to being back on the Thayer for the chantey sings...and to meeting up with all and sundry. I'll be in Santa Clara over Memorial Day weekend with my daughter, scouting out a place to live. She loved the Winchester Mystery House and the Exploratorium when we were there earlier this month. I'll be checking the Folknik for musical events, too. (I think Folklife is a bit too far...) Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Mark is moving -- Hawaii to California From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 26 Apr 05 - 08:05 PM Seems unfair to me. I can't help sympathising with all those poor Hawaiians who'll find themselves up to their necks in water when they leave their homes to go to work. Besides, is there room in CA for an island that size? Must go and lie down DT. |
