Subject: BS: Magic Tricks From: LilyFestre Date: 18 Apr 05 - 07:32 AM I am working on learning some relatively simple magic tricks to share with elementary age children. Do any of you have any favorites that you would be willing to share? Thanks! ML |

Subject: RE: BS: Magic Tricks From: Rapparee Date: 18 Apr 05 - 07:59 AM The Afghan Bands amazes even adults. Just make a Mobius Strip. Ask the kids how many sides it has, and then the kids that it only has one side by drawing a line along it. Then ask them what happens if you cut it in half lengthwise (it makes one long, double twisted, loop). Then ask them what happens if you cut THAT is half! To their surprise it will form two connected loops. Use a long strip of paper about 1.5 inches wide or more, and if you're doing this in front of a class make sure that it's big enough for everyone to see. |

Subject: RE: BS: Magic Tricks From: Cool Beans Date: 18 Apr 05 - 09:30 AM I highly recommend the late Shari Lewis'video of cool tricks and games for your target audience. A favorite: Take two balloons, blown up. Stick a pin in one. It pops. Stick a pin in the other. Nothing happens. How come? Beforehand, take a small piece of scotch tape and stick it on the second balloon. Be sure to jab the pin in the spot covered by the tape. The balloon will remain intact. My daughter amazed her thrird-grade classmates with this. |

Subject: RE: BS: Magic Tricks From: Peace Date: 19 Apr 05 - 10:39 PM Take a glass of water about 3/4 full. Next, place a piece of glossy cardboard over the top. Hold it. Slowly, turn the glass upside down. Take your hand from the cardboard. It will hold. Until you get it just so, practice over a sink. BTW, it is not a trick so much as it is science. The cardboard is not 'stuck' there by an adhesive quality. Gravity holds it there. PS Tell the kids to do it at home when an adult is there with them. They will make mistakes--and wets messes--until they get it right. |
