From my experience at Pensic XIII. You can have an allergic reaction to the spermacide in the sponge. I found that out the hard way. If ever there was a place where a rash shouldn't be, there it was.
So, try the thing while you're at home, and have easy access to cortisone cream. Don't take them on a trip, until you're sure you won't get a rash from the sponge.

I sympathize with your plight of who to give your leftovers to. I knew quite a few postal workers who had stocked up on the extra free mail samples of the feminine products that were found to cause toxic shock syndrome, and were wondering how to dispose of their ill gotten stash all of a sudden.

The spermacide (Nonoxynol-9) used in a number of those contraceptive devices and creams acts like a type of soap. So if you have a problem with soap staying on a sensitive mucous-producing spot of your skin for several hours, you may want to think twice about using a device that is embedded with soap.

Nonoxynol
Nonionic surfactant used as emulsifier, wetting & defoaming agent. Primary component in vaginal foams and creams (spermicidal).

Surfactant
Surface active agent that is able to mix water with oils. Chemicyll, there are 4 types of surfactants including anionic, amphoteric, non-ionic, and cationic surfactants. Basic ingredient in all soap-free personal cleansing products like cleansers, wetting agents, emulsifiers, solubizers, conditioning agents and foam stabilizers.

Me, too. I couldn't use it without residual discomfort from using this soap-like product in a place where soap doesn't belong and under conditions that aggrivate the reaction.
