Subject: RE: Tune Req: Chinkapin Hunting From: GUEST,BanjoRay Date: 03 May 05 - 05:32 AM John, there's often some confusion about Chinquapin Hunting. do you mean the tune that's usually played in A, or do you mean the lovely D tune that we played a few times this weekend at Sewerby - sometimes called Chinquapin? Not many people seem to know about it. I believe it was played by Will Keys among others, using two finger banjo style. Ray |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Chinkapin Hunting From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 03 May 05 - 02:52 PM Probably not what you are looking for but Lomax recorded a dance tune called "Old Bobby Halsy" down at Rugby, Va. 1938 I think was the year, during which Estil Ball sings "Chinquapin' Huntin', huntin', huntin'" it's a simple but effective repetetive piece available on one of E C Ball's CDs. Subject: RE: Tune Req: Chinkapin Hunting From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 04 May 05 - 05:32 AM I have very little knowledge on trees but as I understand it the Chinquapin is a miniature version of a sweet chestnut. Hoot |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Chinkapin Hunting From: Ferrara Date: 04 May 05 - 10:16 AM Found this cached in Google, the original site was gone: Noun 1.chinquapin - shrubby tree closely related to the Allegheny chinkapin but with larger leaves; southern midwest United States Synonyms: Ozark chinkapin, Ozark chinquapin, Castanea ozarkensis 2.chinquapin - shrubby chestnut tree of southeastern United States having small edible nuts Synonyms: Allegheny chinkapin, eastern chinquapin, dwarf chestnut, Castanea pumila 3.chinquapin - small nut of either of two small chestnut trees of the southern United States; resembles a hazelnut Synonyms: chincapin, chinkapin From what I can see, it's like the term "rosewood": it's a word applied to lots of types of oak and their edible acorns. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Chinkapin Hunting From: GLoux Date: 04 May 05 - 11:08 AM You can find "the dots" for Chinquapin Hunting in Jeff Todd Titon's Old Time Kentucky Fiddle Tunes, University Press of Kentucky. He attributes it to Hiram Stamper who was recorded by Bruce Greene. Hiram's son, Art Stamper, recorded it on County CO-CD-2712, The Lost Fiddler. Titon's book includes a CD with some of the tunes from the book, and Chinquapin Hunting is one of them. -Greg |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Chinkapin Hunting From: GLoux Date: 05 May 05 - 08:04 AM Hmmm...the link that Sorcha gave pointed to the Fiddlers' Companion, which stated that Chinquapin Hunting was in A, by Hiram Stamper, which was recorded by Chad Crumm, of the Chicken Chokers. The fiddle is probably in cross-key A. Art Stamper recorded it in standard tuning in D. When I listen to Will Keys play his version, it sounds like the same tune to me. -Greg |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Chinkapin Hunting From: BanjoRay Date: 05 May 05 - 06:35 PM The other Chinquapin Hunting is the A tune from Norman Edmonds which you can hear at the Old Time Music page Cheers Ray |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Chinkapin Hunting From: GLoux Date: 06 May 05 - 10:29 AM Thanks for the pointer...it's also on the Field Recording Collective Norman Edmonds & The Old Timers Volume 2 (#36). I think that's the version that Chad Crumm plays with the Chicken Chokers on Young Fogies. Completely different tune. -Greg |
