Subject: "North to Alaska" - melody origin
From: GUEST,L-Man

Am I right in assuming the melody to Johnny Horton's 1960 "North to Alaska" - allegedly written by a Peter de Angelis - is really mostly based on the US Civil War song, "Give Us A Flag"?

I have NO idea but I used to ADORE this song when I was a kid. We had a Husky and I sang it to him. hehe.

Dwight Yoakum has done a really wonderful cover of this song on his CD, approprietly titled, UNDER THE COVERS, on which he covers some of his favorite tunes. He does wonderful renditions of the following:

Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues
Here Comes The Night
Train In Vain
Baby Don't Go (with Sheryl Crowe)
Witchita Lineman
Playboy (The buck Owens tune)
The Last Time (stones)

and a bunch more

I've also seen Mike Phillips, Johnny Horton, and Tillman Franks and sometimes a combination of the three credited with the composition of the tune as well as Peter de Angelis.

I was abou 14 when I heard that Johnny Horton died. For some reason, like J.F. Kennedy, I know where I was and what I was doing. He was one of my singing heroes.

Beer, he was one of my favourites as well.

I heard a song, by Claude King, on the radio. Several years later, I found Claude King's cassette with the song as the title cut. I was SO disappointed when I got the tape home and it was JAMMED. Couldn't for the life of me get it going. Of course, it was one of those ultrasonically welded ones, so you couldn't even take it apart and put the tape spools into another body! Well, I took it back to the store, but they didn't have another copy. To this date, the song remains a fond memory, but I would love to hear I Remember Johnny, by Claude King, who apparently was a great friend of Johnny Horton!

Now you really got me curious. I never heard the song "I Remember Johnny". Claude King was great also.

Of course, when George Bush Sr.'s buddy Ollie was on trial, we used to sing:

Where the truth is unwinding
Swiss Money they're finding
North to Nicaragua......

Is that Contra & Western?

I used to do "Whispering Pines" and "All for the love of a girl" on stage. They are beautiful songs, and JH was one dynalmite singer. I too recall where I was when he died.

There are some things that you always hold on to. I still have all of his L/P's.
L-Man...sorry to be getting away from your question. I don't have the answer.

It was done for a John Wayne movie, so it was probably stolen from wherever they could get it!
