I'm not sure what another "see? Bigotry still exists!" thread will do for the situation. Of COURSE bigotry still exists...against the Jews, and against many other groups. And it is important to understand that some criticism is well-founded, though usually exaggerated for the sake of argument.

If you have to refer to the obvious, take a little time and explain what makes this one different.

Also, let's not leap to the conclusion that "Martin" actually read the book.    If he actually read the entire article, that would be earth-shaking in itself. It had more than one word over two syllables--might be a strain. His track record of understanding what he reads is also, unfortunately, not very promising.

Its a bad step to ban any academic for their race. I am dismayed if it's true that academics are being black banned because their Jewish.

However, I can support the "black banning" of any academic who propagates the idea that there is a place for torture, as Dershowitz does. This is a very good reason why he should be treated as a bad smell by any institute of learning, not because he's Jewish, but because he is writing papers which can be used as justification by government security agencies to use coercion and pain as methods of extracting information.

I haven't heard about it.
We do have a free press here and some very forthright and articulate members of the Jewish community here in England. It seems strange they have not made their voices heard over a piece of overt racism of the type you seem to be suggesting has taken place.

I'm sure there must be some English Jews on mudcat, perhaps they can shed some light on this matter.

There is a long history of our Academic institutuions getting involved in protest for various causes, my personal favourite being Cambridge flying the Tibetan flag when the Chinese Premier was here having his arse licked by Tony, who had banned pro-Tibetan protest and confiscated flags etc.

Whatever the reasons behind the boycott, regardless of whether it was ill-conceived or not, we should remind ourselves that flinging about accusations of anti-semitism every time some raises the subject of Israel is a neo-conservative ploy and not an invite to genuine discussion about the problem.

Which is not to say that all these 'black=bad are racist in origin. See for example this little tidbit of information:

well my first reaction is that there must be a hell of a lot more repressive regimes than Israel for the university lecturers to vent their annoyance against. I would guess its pretty galling for Israeli citizens - threatened as they are by suicide bombers in their daily lives.

However if the aim of the ban is to get us talking about a political situation that in truth few people care about in this country, I suppose they have succeded.

Not all. but the whiners who I bend out of shape for sure. There are some nice people I communicate with here and they know who they are. But the scumbags who embarrass the world here I have no use for.

My friends are plenty, in 3D, and are real people with good educations and have real values. They are not on web forums because of their dysfunctional lives.

Martin is a hard one for the editors to keep up with. He posts quite a bit, and some of his posts are totally obscene and offensive and some are borderline, and some are just tedious. It's quite a game for the 'clones' catching them all and deciding which ones cross the line and which are just aruumentative and grumpy. If it were up to ME, I'd ban him on principle for the volume of really nasty stuff and the work he causes.....but it ain't up to me.

He knows some stuff, and he 'could' be an interesting curmudgeon, like we already have several of, but he can't leave the insults alone. There's been lots of speculation why anyone would work so hard at being obnoxious, but no one can be sure.

   Maybe his purpose on the Mudcat is to make a few other posters look good by comparison.........
