I am the great grand daughter of Josiah Kennison who was a performer and collector off New England Folk songs in the 30's and 40's . Some of his collected songs were published in a book called Vermont Folk Songs and Ballads written by Helen Hartness Flanders and George Brown. In my research I found that hhe had been recorded in the mid forties. Any chance that someone out there knows anything about my mother's grandfather?

Just in case you aren't already aware of it, the Flanders collection is indexed at Middlebury College Libraries, Vermont: http://web.middlebury.edu/lis/lib/:

Helen Hartness Flanders Ballad Collection

Josiah Kennison's recordings seem to be fully indexed, though obviously you'd have to contact the library to see about hearing them.

Hi s clark,

I am so glad I saw this thread. I will be releasing a new CD on Falling Mountain Music
called "Dad's Dinner Pail and Other Songs From the Helen Hartness Flanders Collection" next month. It was your great grandfather's version of "Dad's Dinner Pail" that I had heard while listening to the source recordings and researching the Collection. I would love to get in touch with you. Please send me a PM or you can email me. My email can be found on my website.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Debra Cowan

Thanks, Joe. I hope that s clark will get in touch. They will be the second great granchild of one of the Flanders source singers that I have found. I was introduced to Lena Bourne Fish's great granddaughter at the Champlain Valley Folk Festival in 2003.

Thanks all for the information. I went to the web site for the Flanders collection and am amazed to find actually recordings of my great grandfather. I can't wait to be able to hear them. I have some biographical info from his family if anyone wants it. I have an article written about him that says he collected songs becasue it was a family tradition going back to his family in England. My family has researched his tree and found his roots in the US go back to the 1600's! what a trove he must have had.
I only wish my mother was aound to hear them. I am sure my family will be thrilled.
