Subject: RE: new york ladies can you dance the polka From: Bobby O'Brien Date: 19 Feb 97 - 08:24 AM This little song is located on an album entitled "Across the sea to Ireland" by Michael "Jesse" Owens, Rego Irish Records Cat # 21000 (tel no. 516-328-7800). Also, Michael "Jesse" Owens still owns Diamond Jim Brady's Pub in lower Manhattan where he performs during the weekends with this band, just in case you have a problem locating the record, he can get you one. |

Subject: RE: new york ladies can you dance the polka From: Barry Finn Date: 17 Mar 97 - 04:16 PM Sorry I can't do notes, but some backround might be intersting. It was sung either at the capstan or the windlass & according to Doerflinger goes back to the 1830's when a new dance called the Polka became the craze.Later versions had the chours altered to Oh you New York Girls You Love Us For Our Money. |
Subject: RE: new york ladies can you dance the polka From: calluna@io.com Date: 17 Mar 97 - 08:25 PM Small group that should be better known called "Broadside Electric" has this on both of their albums in fact. Somewhat different version. I happen to like the version on "Black-Edged Visiting Card" better, but the one on "Amplificato," (?) is also good. Check them out, if you like the song. heather |
