But, in a quote by Gilmour, he and Waters state that any arguments between them (they havent spoken for 20 years) is absolutely petty compared to what Live 8 is trying to do. Waters said "the cynics will scoff... screw em" - which is what i say to anyone who has the audacity to come on this thread and say they shouldnt be doing this. Firstly, to FLoyd fans, this is a dream come true and something we thought would NEVER happen. This is the lineup that recorded Wish You Were Here, Dark Side OF The Moon, Animals, and The Wall. This is the best news we could ever have hoped for But secondly and most importantly. why are they reforming the lineup to do this? TO RAISE AWARENESS OF LIVE 8 AND RAISE MONEY FOR AFRICA. for gods sake, people come on here and say they are sellouts etc, just use your brain... pink floyd, one of THE biggest groups of all time.. and one of the BIGGEST rivalries between Waters and Gilmour.... as if reforming this original lineup wasnt enough to make over half the population ecstatic enough, but the fact that this 20 year feud can be put aside as it is so pathetic compared to the suffering in africa - this is an inspiration to me, and i would have hoped to everyone else. if you dont like the fact they're reforming, fine, but dont come on here spouting your crap. the fact is - this raises awareness so much more, and gets more people involved in the african struggle, and it is more than any of you negative posters will EVER do in your entire lives, so get a grip and leave us fans to enjoy the show, as we most CERTAINLY will |

We were used to "groups in suits" doing covers of Beatles and Hollies songs, so when these giants strode through the crowd and up onto the stage with their fake fur jackets we didn't know what to expect. As the group went through their set of outlandish psycedelic music, the crowd began to drift away. Finally with the place almost empty, they laid down there instruments and stalked off into the night. I could never take their music seriously after that, but I wish I had taped the session....Ake |

Got there breathing hard and five mins before check in closed. In those days you could still smoke on planes, I was given a seat in the first non smoking row, just in front of the last smoking row. It was purgatory smelling those sweet baccy fumes but being two feet away from inhaling. It was obviously the least popular row and the one they filled last, so my lateness secured me a seat on that row. Had forgotten my jacket somewhere along the way and it was freezing in the cabin. As I sat there huddled up shivering and ciggie-less, who sat next to me in the very very last available seat????????? Bloody Roger Waters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He looked very well and lent me the softest leather jacket I have ever curled up in in my life. A thoroughly decent bloke with excellent outerwear. Having said that, I think Wish You Were Here (on repeat) is my favourite album to be seduced by. |

I found out about this when the Rock and Roll Museum in Ohio counted the ballots of all time favorites and announced that Pink Floyd's Money had won. Unfortunately they could not play the long version without bleeps. It makes me wonder how certain rap albums can be broadcast. |

Floyd were absolutely brilliant, but my imagination was sparked by this young, scruffy group who wandered on and stayed for only two numbers, "One Sure Thing" and "Season Of The Witch". Two numbers it was, but my whole life was changed from that moment and I vowed to follow them to the ends of the earth. They had this breathy-voiced girl singer, this elegantly-bearded bass player who seemed to be in charge of things, a Prince Valiant lookalike in the rhythm section - but what boiled my kettle was an unkempt 17-year-old who really could make his Fender sit up and beg, an astonishing but shy guitarist who played breathtaking music. It was when they came back from the horror of a motorway death crash and exploded onto the scene with an ingenious hybrid, one which married traditional music with drums and electric guitars, that sealed my fate. Fairport Convention, it's your fault! Oh... Floyd were extremely satisfying at the London Live8, topping everybody except Macca - but then I knew that they would be. |

Two observations to finish. The re-union worked well for the occassion, I (for one) thoroughly enjoyed it over all. I was so moved by it (blasting out, wired through my stereo) that tears (of sheer joy) were rolling down my face as 'Numb' came to its climax. Secondly, Pink Floyd don't need Roger any more. They make a great sound without him. Their quality did not diminish after his departure (IMHO). The Earls Court show (with Sam Brown et al on backing vocals) -thankfully taped off the TV a while back (what a pity it's apparently not available on DVD!) ranks as my all time favourite concert to watch and watch, again and again. 'Pulse' the live CD set from the same source - truly magnificent! I like all things folk (I should point out) - but STILL rate the Floyd! HFA |

From: s6k Date: 05 Jul 05 - 12:54 PM i was disappointed with paul mccartney. i think he could have done better. and the performance with U2 as opener, surprisingly, didnt do anything for me. then again, im not the biggest U2 fan. comfortably numb - roger sounded exactly like he does on the record, listen to it, his verses are always in stark contrast to Gilmours very tuneful chorus, its one of the things that makes the song work so well. david and roger have both said horrible things about eachother, its not all rogers fault. asked why he hadnt talked to Waters for over 15 years a while ago, David replied, "Rogers a prick" among other things, general bitty batty banter between the two. "pink floyd dont need roger any more" i dont think this is the right observation to make. im one of the people who really like the division bell album. it was brilliant, and floyd proved they can do it without roger. But with Roger, pure magic occurs. without roger, floyd would NEVER have made the wall / dark side / animals or wish you were here - and this would have rendered them relatively unknowns. they dont NEED roger, but it would be absolutely unbelievably amazingly nice if they could do something together again |

Started "Echoes" on 33 then slipped it up to 78. Let it run for a lttle bit then brought it back down to 33. Took about a half hour for wind down to normal speed. Still have the turtable and the vinyl. Hum. Might have to try it again. But then I'll have to dig out "Ummagumma" and then I'll be lost in that cave LEJ spoke about. I have the video of "Delicate sound of Thunder" and play it really loud. never knew Gilmour was using a pedal steel for some his licks until seeing it. |

You could indeed say this but - it would be slightly less true. I have always thought that Nick Mason's drumming was really original and that no one else quite plays like he does. Dave Gilmour's guitar work again - has created new ways of playing and has set a standard. There are bass players who have reached similar standards of originality in their playing - but I do not think that Roger Waters can be thought to be one or to stand-out as a bass player alone. It was nice to see him back - but I do not think the overall sound would have been much different (or any worse) - had he not been there. |

Floyd got on fine without him in commercial terms, but artistically? Both Momentary lapse of reason and The division bell lacked bite. They were perfectly good Dave Gilmour albums, but compared to stuff like Animals and Wish you were here they're pretty insipid. It's probably fair to argue that The wall and especially The final cut were Waters solo albums, his dominance was too strong on those Perhaps like Lennon and McCartney, these are two blokes who brought out the best in each other but just couldn't sustain a friendship |

Date: 06 Jul 05 - 07:00 AM After reading all this ass kissing hippie gumph I have come to the conclusion I must have missed Pink Floyds set and watched some elderly combo on another channel, by mistake, perform "Wish You Were Here" etc. After the excitement of that young firebrand Robbie Williams and the polished guitar crescendos of The Who (yeah! they were great but not "The Who" as we remember them, for obvious reasons so I'll leave that there) and some terrific young bands e.g. The Stereophonics, Travis, Keane etc.I thought "Pink" were pedestrian rock with slightly less enthusiasm than Dylan from the Magic Roundabout (not the Mr Zimmerman for our US cousins who maybe don't know of Magic Roundabout). Before you accuse and let fly your slings and arrows; Yes I do possess the original mono copy of "Piper at The Gates" and CDs of "Dark Side" "Wish You" and "The Wall" etc. and on occasion I am moved to reminisce about those halcyon days.However, I cannot conform to this illusion that "Pink" were anything other than a pale shadow of former glories and were totally swamped by other far less established groups with much poorer musical groundings simply by the fact that they disappeared up there own asses ready to be kissed maybe? Nostalgia rules eh? Anyone want to swap Pink Floyd CDs for The Libertines or The Killers or The Kaiser Chiefs? We love our Art School University White boy poppy rock in this country and fail to see the majesty of the real talent that influenced and nurtured this movement.My message to you all is listen to Robert Johnson, Son House, Skip James, Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Mose Allison, Josh White et al and kiss ass for the right reasons. From: s6k Date: 06 Jul 05 - 08:17 AM i dont need a lesson from you, i adore robert johnson, blind willie johnson, christy moore, martin carthy, son house, bob marley, paco de lucia - broad range of stuff there, but i also love prog rock, and Floyd were and are one of the best bands ever to tread shoe leather. the problem with a lot of you folkies is that you think in order to be a folk fan, you have to only like folk and blues, if you like rock, youre not a proper fan. music is music. everyone likes different stuff, deal with it |
