Subject: Looking for Blues Lyrics
From: Steve Latimer
Date: 22 Dec 98 - 12:52 PM

Many years ago I saw the late great Irish blues player Rory Gallagher. He did a blues song that started

My baby left me, she ran off with the Garbageman, x2 Now I ain't got nobody, to take away my trash can"

Some of the best blues lyrics I've ever heard, but I don't know the name of the song and can't remember the rest of the lyrics.

I was speaking to an old blues harp player the other day and he remembers having heard the song and feels that it is quite old and originally done by a big name blues man, but couldn't remember who.

I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could get me these lyrics and perhaps let me know if Rory ever recorded it or if they know who else may have.

I have done more research and have been told that it's both a Muddy Waters song called "Garbage Man" or it's a Sonny Boy Williamson song called "When My Baby She Left Me". Knowing the nature of the blues, it could be both of these.

It's driving me nuts, please help.

I listened to several sound samples of Muddy Waters singing GARBAGE MAN, and this is what I heard:

My baby, she run away with the garbage man.
Yeah, you know, my baby, she run away with the garbage man.
Please come back to me, so you can empty my garbage can.

I don't know where this little girl been, and I don't know where she going.
I don't know where this woman been, and I don't know where she going.
Please come back to me, woman. My garbage can is overflowing.

[According to some sources, this song is attributed to Willie Hammond.]

GARBAGE MAN

I wanna tell you about my baby,
Yeah..., she run off with the garbage man.
I wanna tell you about my baby,
Yeah..., she ran away with the garbage man.

She better come back quick,
Come back and empty my garbage can.

I don't know where she's been,
And I don't know where she going.
I don't know where she's been,
And I don't know where she going.

Please, come on back baby,
My trash can is really over flowin'.

You know babe,
She spend all my hard earned cash.
You know babe,
She spend all my hard earned cash.

She better come back this morning,
Steal you a shotgun,
Steal you a shotgun,
Steal you a shotgun,
and…….

B.

Rory Gallagher performing "Garbage Man"

I have to say it wouldn't be my favourite track by this superb artist, but it's differences of opinion makes the world go round ...
