Subject: RE: Merry Christmas, Everyone! From: Ana Date: 23 Dec 98 - 06:52 PM Well apparently NZ's the first country to wake up to Xmas. The weather's shaping up beautifully-it's presently 25C,an immaculate sun-shiney day, narey a cloud in the sky. The sea is a spangley turquoise, and the wee yachts are sailing in a cooling breeze. The snow has now completely melted from the distant hazy blue mountains. Family (both blood and heart) are starting to gather;carols tonight, food and drink tomorrow (oh and pressies), then picnics with left overs (and more alcohol no doubt) until New Year when it's time for another bash!!Aaah- I'm on holiday-yippee!! Have a fun Xmas everyone, and may the new year bring your hearts desi |

Subject: RE: Merry Christmas, Everyone! From: Mick Lowe Date: 23 Dec 98 - 09:57 PM Who cares where we're from.. I'm English, proud of it but will fight anyone who says they love Irish music better than I do.. or English Folk, or American Blues... it's the music that counts and more so the playing of it.. and beyond that the very special opportunity we have in transcending geographical boundaries via the net and the mudcat, in sharing the passion we all share. I feel very honoured that I have such a vast resource of friends and knowledge at my disposal. I am endebted to everyone who has responded to my many "questions" this past year. I hope everyone has a very merry Christmas and the New Year brings joy to you all. Mick |

Mick Lowe, you don't have to fight anyone to demonstrate your love of Irish Music, you have shown it to us over and over. To all my friends at the Mudcat, thanks for the community we have built here. Happy Christmas to all, and a prosperous New Year. All the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: Merry Christmas, Everyone! From: Ritchie Date: 24 Dec 98 - 09:20 AM My introduction to Mudcat was thro' looking for words to a song about drinking... Well ,as is customary around this time, we all leave work at lunch time to partake in a little light refreshment. I voluntered to come back to work 'to man the fort'. Hee hee...really it was to logon (see the thread about addiction) I felt that I had to wish everyone lot's of love and Peace & Happiness thro'out the whole world. Funnily enough I invited my 21 year old son, who is home from University to join us..."what have you bought Mam for christmas ?" I asked him... "Oh, I've written her a poem" he replied (he was only joking, the tease..)but I then thought of all the nice poems and songs that have ever been written and thought would n't that be a nice thing to do..... So my wife(who I love dearly)'s big present this year is.. an introduction to Mudcat and all the lovely, kind, knowledgeable, warm etc.etc. people that I have been lucky and priveleged to meet. Thank you all.Merry Christmas Everyone. love and happiness Ritchie

Subject: RE: Merry Christmas, Everyone! From: John in Minnesota Date: 24 Dec 98 - 09:49 AM Merry Christmas to all of you around the world. Here in Minnesota we have been afraid that we would not have a white Christmas. Just in time, our friends in Manitoba and Alberta have sent us some good old fashioned winter weather. We have a couple of inches of snow on the ground and it should get up to 10 degrees F. today, our warmest in a week. My wife and I are looking forward to bringing in the New Year with a dance at the Tapestry Folk Dance Center in Minneapolis. I am new to the Internet, and very happy to have found a site like the Mudcat. |

Subject: RE: Merry Christmas, Everyone! From: Peter T. Date: 24 Dec 98 - 11:40 AM As usual asking questions. Can anyone here work out a way to make ordinary people unashamed of singing together the rest of the year the way they still seem to be willing to at Christmas? That is my Christmas wish, and I am sure all Mudcatters feel the same. Could somebody work on this and get back to us in time for the new year? Best of the season to all. Yours. Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Merry Christmas, Everyone! From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Dec 98 - 04:38 PM Peter, I'll second your wish. I've been trying to get ordinary people to sing all my life, with mixed results. Let's all keep trying, eh? I have another wish: someday, I'd love to hear all of us here at Mudcat, singing together at the same time and in the same place. Many of us were singing "Amazing Grace" last weekend at the time of the execution - I could almost feel all of us together as I sang. I wish we could sing together for a happier occasion. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Merry Christmas, Everyone! From: McMusic Date: 24 Dec 98 - 08:41 PM Mick Lowe, No offense meant, my friend. 'Though I'm Irish to the bone (all 4 grand parents came from the old country), I have no inherent hostility towards the English. To be truthful about it, I've been fortunate to have met several people from England and have found them to be warm, delightful folks. This said, may I offer a special greeting to you and yours, and any other 'Catters who come from GB--may the peace of God settle gently upon you, and may my people and yours come to a better understanding and appreciation for one another; and may the sorrows of our shared history lead us all to a greater compassion for our fellow men--and women. God bless. |
Subject: RE: Merry Christmas, Everyone! From: McMusic Date: 24 Dec 98 - 08:47 PM Peter T.-- That is the Great Undertaking. Not to go off on a theological bender, but sometimes I think we've been given the blueprint to earthly paradise; we just haven't discovered how to get one another to go along with it. Perhaps one day the progress of mankind will lead us there, huh? God bless again. |

Subject: RE: Merry Christmas, Everyone! From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 25 Dec 98 - 05:49 PM As Christmas fades here in Maryland, it is as cold as December. There is a skiff of snow on the ground that makes it all pretty without ruining the roads for travel. I attended a party with my second cousins this year. They are part of the next generation in my family, young men and women with children in those wondrous ages from about 4 to 12 years old. I do not see them often, maybe every 3 or 4 years, but I was asked to bring my guitar and I did. We had some flute, violin, and vocal Christmas music from the kids and then I got out my box. I started with a few carols, just the guitar, no singing. My 88 year old uncle who often doesn't even know what building he is began to sing along. Slowly others joined in. Late, I began with my second cousins' favorite song, "I Wish I Was a Little Bar of Soap." I first sang it for these young women when they were probably six or seven. Without prompting, they joined in, and then their husbands joined in and finally their children joined in. I sang a few new verses I have learned. The song has been passed along to two generations and it warms my heart to have been apart of it. The other "requests" were for "How Do I Know My Youth is All Spent" and "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road." Not Christmas, but as family remembrances. This holiday is already a special warm memory in my heart because music has enabled us to touch each other. My aunt and uncle, the matriarch and patriarch of this group. May not last another Christmas and all of the adults know this. This Christmas will forever be special to me and I believe for others in the room as well, and the music will be a part of that. Merry Christmas everyone! Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: RE: Merry Christmas, Everyone! From: Alice Date: 25 Dec 98 - 07:25 PM Roger, that was a very touching story. Thank you. I spent the day with my son, cooking cherry pie and turkey dinner while we watched a video of The Sound of Music. He went in his room to read (Count of Monte Cristo, school homework) and when I went to call him to dinner, I found him asleep. I ate alone!! He is still sound asleep. I checked into the Mudcat, and here I met with people I have come to treasure, even though we may never meet face to face. As the day has faded into darkness, I wish you a Merry Christmas. Thanks, friends. alice in montana |
Subject: RE: Merry Christmas, Everyone! From: Barbara Shaw Date: 25 Dec 98 - 07:45 PM Alice, thinking about you eating alone made me realize how many people must have done that today, despite the storybook image of big, jolly family gatherings. Your son is lucky to have a mother like you. My husband and I went down to the Soup Cellar with our instruments and sang carols for a HUGE CROWD for about an hour. Not only were there dozens of guests, there were dozens of volunteers, too many in fact. Many who just wanted someplace warm and friendly to go for Christmas. And we all found that place. May all you mudcat folks have a joyful holiday season, with music and folks you care about. |

Subject: RE: Merry Christmas, Everyone! From: Big Mick Date: 26 Dec 98 - 09:41 AM Every time I think it all has been said, there you 'Catters go again. Roger, we are brothers under it all. You made me feel the feelings of that gathering, as if I were there. And I appreciate the invite, I had a great time. Alice, God bless you for being a part of our town. You cannot imagine the mental images I had, and the thoughts as I imagined your day and your thoughts. You have been such a source of good feeling in our community here, and I always look forward to your thread comments. May yuour son grow to be just like you. We could use a men like that. And, you have a great web page. I especially like the diary. Skarpi, you are a window on another culture, and I find the mix of Ireland/Iceland to be fascinating. I hope you will take the time to tell us more about the 13 Santa's and their names and meanings. My treasured friend, Barbara, why does it not surprise that you would be off singing for others on Christmas. You are a pearl of great worth, but you already know that I think that of you. You bless us with your presence. Alan, you are a good friend, but why do you persist in drinking that "swill" when Guinness is available? ****LOL****. Thanks for all your sharing of your knowledge my friend. You know what I am talking about. You are never afraid to help and I am grateful. And to all of you Mudcatters, friends who are and friends who will be, let us continue to improve our haven in '99. We have something special here, and that is due to all of you. All the best, Mick Lane |
Subject: RE: Merry Christmas, Everyone! From: Animaterra Date: 26 Dec 98 - 07:47 PM I had a beautiful day with my family, and like many of you also wondered about those spending the day alone, or as good as alone. With Joe and Peter I wish for more songs in the lives of others, and make that my mission all year long, offering group "singalongs" and such in my community. Joe, I too felt an incredible connection during "Amazing Grace" the night of the execution- what a powerful experience! Merry Christmas to you all, whether warm or cold, alone or (like me) suffering from a surfeit of jolly relations! Most of us in the US have forgotten that there are still 10 more official days of Christmas, so let's keep singing and celebrating! Peace- Allison BTW if you see Sandy Paton, congratulate him on the birth of another beautiful grandchild! |
