Subject: BS: Abdul From: TheBigPinkLad Date: 22 Jul 05 - 03:40 PM This just in: PAULA ABDUL LOBBIES FOR CALIFORNIA MANICURE HYGIENE SACRAMENTO, California (Reuters) - Describing a debilitating thumb infection that caused her to 'scream in pain,' 'American Idol' judge Paula Abdul urged California lawmakers on Monday to crack down on nail salon hygiene. Abdul, a former Lakers cheerleader who gained some fame in the 1980s as a pop singer, spoke at a state legislative hearing in the state capital of Sacramento in support of a bill that would mandate tougher hygiene standards for nail salons. |

Subject: RE: BS: Abdul From: Azizi Date: 22 Jul 05 - 06:33 PM Just for the record, online biographies for Paula Abdul indicate that she is of Syrian-Brazilian/French-Canadian ancestry. Because somewhere in that mix she has at least one drop of 'Black' blood {and therefore, according to USA traditions, she is considered to be Black}, Paula Abdul is routinely featured in African American magazines as "Ebony" and "Essence". See this excerpt from a biography on Paula Abdul: "Her father (Harry Abdul) is of Sephardic Jewish background from Syria. Her mother is also Jewish and was born in Canada. Her parents have lived in Syria, Brazil, and Canada - and this varied background has contributed to incredibly different stories in the press about her nationality and/or religion. Daughter of Harry Abdul (once a livestock trader in Brazil) and Lorainne Abdul (former assistant to film director Billy Wilder}, grew up in Hollywood, California..." More Here Also, Paula Abdul is included in this List of Multiracial People **** It would be interesting if someone knowledgeable about the subject can explain the use of the surname "Abdul" by Sephardic Jewish people from Syria. Thank you. Azizi |
Subject: RE: BS: Abdul From: SharonA Date: 23 Jul 05 - 01:12 PM *Thread creep alert* Hey, how come Wayne Newton isn't on that list of famous biracial and multiracial people that Azizi linked? Okay, I realize that I'm asking a rhetorical question, but it still surprises me that he's not on the list; I thought his background was well known. For the record, his father is Powahatan (Native American) and Irish, and his mother is Cherokee and German. *end of thread creep* Anyway, even though lobbying for tougher hygiene standards for nail salons sounds silly on the surface, I don't see anything wrong with it. I don't go to nail salons myself, but if I did, I would prefer that they be as sanitary as possible, given that the nail-stylists (or whatever the proper term is) are working with scissors, cuticle trimmers and other sharp objects that can cut the skin around the nail. If some salons have conditions so unsanitary that they are causing deep, excruciatingly painful infections in their customers, by all means clean 'em up! |

Subject: RE: BS: Abdul From: Peace Date: 23 Jul 05 - 04:53 PM Well, her plight--hurt nail an all--should take some heat off what's going on in Iraq and Afghanistan. Also, we'll have something to consider other than global warming, starving children, terrorists, etc. I feel so BAD for Paula. |
Subject: RE: BS: Abdul From: Peace Date: 23 Jul 05 - 04:59 PM When I go to the barber on Tuesday next, I shall inSIST that he bleach the premises before I sit in the chair. I shall have to request that he take extra precautions with the razor and cutting implements. In fcat, if I insist that he bleach the place first, I should not then ask for a shave, because I have no doubt he'd slip with the razor. Has no sense of humour does my barber. |
Subject: RE: BS: Abdul From: Peace Date: 23 Jul 05 - 05:00 PM Will Paula receive counselling for her tragedy with the nail? Will she be OK? Stay tuned, for I am sure there is a soap opera in the making here on the 'cat. |
