Subject: BS: PC mealtimes From: brid widder Date: 22 Jul 05 - 08:17 PM As a nurse, I often care for patients who are totally dependant and need help at mealtimes... if a patient needs help to put food into their mouth we feed them... It has been suggested that the use of the word 'feed' is inappropriate and may cause offence.... after all we 'feed' animals!! (I kid you not!) So... I know this forum has some clever buggers... what do you all think... we would hate to cause offence what could we say instead... so far my favourite is 'facilitate nutritional intake. and can you think of any other apparently innocent words which are a terrible offence waiting to happen? |

Subject: RE: BS: PC mealtimes From: Skivee Date: 22 Jul 05 - 08:31 PM I think feed is appropriate. Who is complaining? The patients? Okay, how about "assisted dining"? |

Subject: RE: BS: PC mealtimes From: jacqui.c Date: 22 Jul 05 - 09:06 PM I think that all right minded folk should start a revolution to preserve our language from the PC prats who seem hell bent onmaking any sort of conversation a minefield. Anybody else out there getting totally fed up with these idiots who see an insult in so many words? I'm just going to make sure I use as much non-pc language as often as I possibly can. Maybe it will drive these prissy minded idiots into a withdrawal! |

Subject: RE: BS: PC mealtimes From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 22 Jul 05 - 10:41 PM Yes, it's true, we "feed" animals. We also feed babies. To go faster, we feed gas to the engine. We feed wood to the fire in the fireplace when it gets low. We feed the flames of rebellion or discontent sometimes, and we feed wild rumors. I'm sure if I wanted to bother to go to my unabridged dictionary I could come up with a lot of other "feedings". I guess I could feed a lot more usages to you, as it were. "Feed" is a general word, and need have no negative implications. Anyone who objects to "feed" in the situation you describe needs to be fed a right cross to the chops! Dave Oesterreich |

Subject: RE: BS: PC mealtimes From: dianavan Date: 23 Jul 05 - 01:22 AM How about the phrase, "minimally meets the widely-held expectations of those in a similar grade group?" I think you either meet the expectations or you do not meet the expectations. How can you minimally meet anything? Who thought of that? I'd say as long as you don't attach a feed back to their face, the term, 'feeding' is just fine. Very good, uncle Daveo - Excellent examples. We feed alot of things. I feed the parking meter. anymore? ... |

Subject: RE: BS: PC mealtimes From: Amos Date: 23 Jul 05 - 02:28 AM Feed is the word for giving food to someone, regardless of species, among other things. If subliterate pussies are going to whine about the use of synonyms troubling their lazy little brains, they better stop thinking about careers in nursing!! A |

Subject: RE: BS: PC mealtimes From: GUEST,Cluin Date: 23 Jul 05 - 02:40 AM And why do I keep hearing cops on the news using the word attend? "The suspect attended at the victim's residence..." "When the officer attended at the scene..." Fuck off! He WENT there, okay? Excuse me while I go attend at the toilet.... |

Subject: RE: BS: PC mealtimes From: LilyFestre Date: 23 Jul 05 - 03:21 PM I was thinking along the lines of Uncle Dave O, we feed babies, why not anyone else? Sometimes I think people have WAY too much time on their hands and are purposefully looking for ways to be offended. If there ever comes a time that I am unable to eat by myself, I hope to God that someone does FEED ME! Sheesh. Michelle |

Subject: RE: BS: PC mealtimes From: bfdk Date: 24 Jul 05 - 08:37 AM Ah, now, that *is* sexist in the extreme. A hunt for a more politically correct term must be put under way immediately. Be MANnerly and don't use the word again until further notice, or one of the language purists will surely either MANhandle or MANgle you severely or - who knows - give you a MANicure which will prevent you from picking up objects with inappropriate names for a good while ;-)) Anyway, this quest for hunting up new names for any number of things and concepts reminds me of an old song (Danish) in which the milkmaids formed an association with the sole purpose of changing their age-old job title. No more were they to be known as milkmaids. Instead they wanted to be "Cow teat grip, squeeze & release assistants" ;-)) |

Subject: RE: BS: PC mealtimes From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 24 Jul 05 - 10:45 AM The time-honored(????) PC idea of substituting "person" for "man" in sch words as "chairman", etc., is fatally flawed by internal inconsistency. PerSON? We get that dreaded maleness intruding its ugly and regrettable head again! I guess we need to change the second syllable of "person" to "child". Thus we get "chairchild", "perchildhole", "huchildity", all of which afre childifestly ridiculous! Dave Oesterreich |
