Subject: Help with historic documents From: An Englishman Abroad Date: 25 Jul 05 - 11:35 AM I am trying to save a lot of searching on the net with this question. I have a friend here in the USA who has a lot of information about a distant relative from Wales around the mid to late 1700s. She knows he was an Indentured Clerk and sailed from London with a ship load of other Indentured people. There must be some records of the sailing somewhere. Also is Sommerset House still the place to get records. How would you go about geting the information. Any help appreciated. all the best John |
Subject: RE: Help with historic documents From: GUEST Date: 25 Jul 05 - 11:41 AM It may now be 'The Public Record Office'- which you would find at: Kew, Richmond, Surrey, TW9 4DU England. I know they store lots of the ship passenger lists as well as birth, death, and armed forces records. Good Luck. |

Subject: RE: Help with historic documents From: katlaughing Date: 25 Jul 05 - 01:43 PM Look at cyndi's list.com. It has an exhaustive amount of links to all kinds of genealogical research sites. I am sure I found some ships' records there, at one time. If I still had my membership an ancestry.com, I'd look it up for you. They have lots and lots of records, too, but they DO charge. I've noticed each time they add a popular databank the up the price for use of. When I have more time, I'll see if I can find that ships' listings. All the best, kat |

Subject: RE: Help with historic documents From: GUEST,petr Date: 25 Jul 05 - 04:24 PM you can find ships passenger lists for free, if you just do a google search, although there are some sites that charge, heres a free one ships lists it helps to vary the spelling of the name, as often the list was transcribed by volunteers and its not always easy to make out the names. there are some sites that also have digitized images of the ships list (which means that it might be more accurate but harder to search) cheers Petr |
Subject: RE: Help with historic documents From: Liz the Squeak Date: 25 Jul 05 - 04:34 PM The Public Record office at Kew does mostly service records. For geneology (family history) you need to apply to: The Family Record Centre Farringdon London NW1 It's not been Somerset House for many years. You can employ researchers here who will do it for you, or you could try Genforum which will take you to one of my family pages but should get you some ideas. Good luck.... it's very time consuming and engrossing..... LTS |
