Just heard on TV of the death of Rt Hon Robin Cooke MP

taken ill in Scotland walking and then heard had died

A folkie friendly MP who had resigned from government over IRAQ

invasion

I believe he had recently been given another post in the Blair

government

A fine centre-left politician in my opinion - one who combined radicalism, intelligence and honesty - a rare combination.

I have heard him speak a number of times over the years - not only was he a good speaker who got his points across very clearly and concisely but he was also very witty with a sharp sense of humour.

He will be sorely missed by the labour movement.

Yep, pegged out. RIP. Not so sanguine as some of you, I am just a little bit cynical about what he professed to be fightng for, but...

He did as he as he saw fit, mostly stood his corner, & did it in the public eye. Best of luck to him in whatever comes next!

Respected as a man of principles and prepared to stand up for them, even if he was wrong on most things!
Not respected as a man who ditched a loyal wife for a floozie.

And here I was, waiting for news of Mo Mowlam's health! Still, I respected and perhaps admired Cook for his stance on the Iraq War. I had considerably less respect for his private life but I know there's never just one side that is at fault, and I remember some of his ex-wife's less impressive utterances.

He certainly is a loss to British politics. RIP, Robin Cook.

Could we spell his name right please? Cook not Cooke.

First John Smith, now Robin Cook. Walking holidays in Scotland seem to be dangerous for Labour politicians, at least for ones with some kind ofd integrity.

I imagine they'd be safe enough for most of the front bench...

His public life was ours. His private life was his. That's how it should be - let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Would that all politicians were made of the same stuff as Robin Cook - the world would be a far, far better place.

Robin was a folkie, usual to put in top bit, certainly a man of his calibre and sense of justice

he was invited to Radio 2 Harding programme to give presentation to award winners a couple of years ago

We need all the folkies we can get in high places

We have now lost Robin and John Peel (spelling ok?)

No snide remarks about Mr Harding please!! see elsewhere

I don't like the 'Labour' party, but there were a few Labour Politions (Spelling) that I liked and Robin Cook was one of them, he stood up for his prisapills (Spelling), and I liked that, a person that stands up for what they believe in.

Some people in this thread have called Cook a folkie.
An honest (that is, not rhetorical) question from someone
unfamiliar with Mr Cook - what folkie things did he do?

I originally said that Robin Cook was a 'folkie friendly MP'
and that we needed all such personality such as this [to promote the folk music and opinons which we stand for]

I said later that he was invited to present the prizes to winners of folk awards on BBC Radio 2 folk programme fronted by Mike Harding, the same year as Estelle Morris and Steven Fry I believe! (2004)?

Robin as is well documented became in my view a 'folk icon' by way of resigning from Government by way of his heart felt views on Iraq which can be viewed via the internet by usual prompt words.

If you wish to demote him from this part of thread then so be it

Ray

I too was really sorry to hear of Robin Cook's death, which occurred not    too far from here. As someone said in an article I read in the week, along with Robin died any chance of the Labour Party returning to it's socialist roots. He was a man of intelligence, integrity, and political nouse, the only other high profile 'leftie' in the labour party now is that lapdog Prescott. He however should stick to doing the Churchill insurance adverts, and let other more able people get on with running this country. As for Robin Cook's private life it is none of my, or any other person on the forum's business, and commenting upon in it in a condolence thread is in extremely bad taste.
Giok

At the funeral, horse-racing pundit John McCririck made a blistering attack on Tony Blair for staying away. Cabinet poodles like Prescott and Hain leapt to their master's defence of course.

McCririck looked as if he was about to say something sensible for the first time in his life until he named the examplar of virtue he wished Bliar to emulate - one of the most evil women in history.

Being wrong doesn't make people evil, Richard. Anyway McC was not in any sense presenting Thatcher as an exemplar of virtue. Just pointing out that if even someone such as her was capable of doing right by an adversary worthy of respect, then Blair's selfishness was beyond excuse.

(Surely Peter Hain, who was under no obligation to say anything on this matter, has degenerated into one of the most odiously sycophantic politicians of recent times?)
