Subject: BS: Sterling/Crystal People? From: Sorcha Date: 08 Aug 05 - 02:56 PM I have a pair of sterling silver salt and pepper shakers with lead crystal liners that were my grans. Think they were bought in US around 1940. Makers mark is worn off. Jewller can see where it was but not read it. Anybody here know anything about this stuff? I have pics and measurments I can send. Edinburgh Crystal tried but was no help. Waterford next? Because of the date I think they were purchased, I'll bet it's NOT Austrian crystal. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sterling/Crystal People? From: beardedbruce Date: 08 Aug 05 - 03:18 PM I have several sets of "weighted sterling" salt & pepper shakers. One set has the glass inserts. In weighted sterling, the metal is sterling, but thin. It is formed over other material, such as plaster. The bottoms will have concentric circles, the words "weighted sterling", and usually a number ( 3 or 4 digit) that is the catalog number. And I agree that Replacements Limited is a great place to find out about patterns. Good call, CarolC. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sterling/Crystal People? From: Sorcha Date: 08 Aug 05 - 03:23 PM BB, it just says....sterling.....would my jeweller know? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Sterling/Crystal People? From: beardedbruce Date: 08 Aug 05 - 03:32 PM If the metal is paper thin, it is probably weighted. If there is a jeweler's mark/hallmark on it, it is probably NOT weighted. Look for the concentric circles on the bottom. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sterling/Crystal People? From: Sorcha Date: 08 Aug 05 - 03:40 PM Concentric circles on the top/shaker part...only thing on the bottom is the outside circles of the threads to screw in the crystal liner. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sterling/Crystal People? From: Amos Date: 08 Aug 05 - 07:15 PM I would just add that the folks here are certainly sterling people, although some of them aspire to being crystal people as well. A |
