Subject: BS: Ducks Fly South (and a bit west) From: Mrs.Duck Date: 09 Aug 05 - 12:32 PM Along with a considerable number of other UK catters the Duck family are coming to the Getaway in October. After that we are heading North to Canada through Buffalo and Niagra round the lake to Toronto and then maybe continue round and back south to New York to fly home on 30th October. We would love to meet up with any Mudcatters en route. We are seriously considering moving to canada so need to find out what we think of it. I'd especially like to visit Whitby given our connections with the same named town here. We haven't decided whether to hire a car and use motels or hire a campervan (RV) so any local insight into that would also be very useful. I'm so excited!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: MMario Date: 09 Aug 05 - 12:37 PM Mrs Duck - I cannot speak for WYSIWYG - but she is conveniently located about halfway to the Canadian border from Getaway. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: jacqui.c Date: 09 Aug 05 - 12:44 PM Wish you were coming via Maine - you'd probably want to stay! |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: MMario Date: 09 Aug 05 - 12:53 PM It's a loverly time of year to tour up through the Northern tier of PA and the southern tier of NY - then up through the finger lakes and around Lake Ontario to Toronto - should be nearly peak "leaf-peeper" season - certain to be so *somewhere* along that route. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: R. Padgett Date: 09 Aug 05 - 01:02 PM That sounds absolutely wonderful Jane and Geoff and family and I hope you have the most unforgettable and brilliant time, you deserve it See you in August at Whitby (UK) shortly How did you enjoy Warwick? Ray |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: wysiwyg Date: 09 Aug 05 - 01:04 PM Oh yes, any number of guests would be very welcome, in either direction or both. Long or short stay. And Mmario, you can too speak for me, especially this year and around G'way time! ~Susan |

Nevermind-- just follow Mmario as he departs the Getaway, stop for groceries/beer when he does, and keep coming along! Duckpond arrranged as well. ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: Mrs.Duck Date: 09 Aug 05 - 05:17 PM Consider yourself visited Susan! |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: wysiwyg Date: 09 Aug 05 - 05:26 PM OK, please let me know details as you know them. It would be good to know how many and what dates by Oct. 1 if possible, tho it is always easy to add more-- we have a churchful of pews we can use, too! :~) ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: Mrs.Duck Date: 09 Aug 05 - 05:38 PM Will do Susan - numbers I do know its five thats me Geoff and the three children. It would be really good to visit for a couple of nights straight after the getaway before we head up to Canada if that would be OK. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: wysiwyg Date: 09 Aug 05 - 05:55 PM Posilutely-- a special privilege for us, as we cannot get away ourselves. Also, if people know you are coming to roost, no doubt others will migrate as well. Do the Ducks care to have the Dorm to themselves or shall we mix you all up a bit? (There are a couple of other rooms in the main house as well.) ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: Geoff the Duck Date: 09 Aug 05 - 06:37 PM Been looking at the photos Susan. It looks like paradise. Any proper beer to be had in that end of the world? Quack!! Geoff. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: wysiwyg Date: 09 Aug 05 - 07:12 PM Opinions vary-- but there IS an empty beer fridge waiting for material to audition! ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: MMario Date: 09 Aug 05 - 07:57 PM the locale is pretty rural "proper beer" may need to be hauled north from the more urban areas around the Getaway. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: wysiwyg Date: 09 Aug 05 - 08:50 PM Well, tell ya what-- Hardi and me'll make it our sacred duty to check out a couple of things, and we'll call September "Duck Beer Month." :~) ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: Mrs.Duck Date: 10 Aug 05 - 05:07 AM We don't mind sharing but bear in mind the kids have a different view on what constitutes waking up time lol. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: MMario Date: 10 Aug 05 - 08:45 AM after w weekend at Getaway - a brass band could probably march through the dorm while people were sleeping and not disturb... no, on second thought, for music they would wake up! |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: wysiwyg Date: 10 Aug 05 - 09:06 AM If it's definite you're coming post-Getaway, we should probably mention that in one of the Getaway threads, or start a Gathering thread.... what do you think, Mmario? ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: Mrs.Duck Date: 10 Aug 05 - 01:55 PM Yes we are definitely coming. We plan to travel up to Buffalo on Wednesday so stopping Monday and Tuesday night there would be great. We aim to end our journey at Mystic Seaport (Fri/Sat 28th/29th) if there are any Mudcatters in that area it would be great to meet up. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: wysiwyg Date: 10 Aug 05 - 02:22 PM Sounds grand-- here, we would say "just ducky!"! You shall be holding court. I was serious about the pond BTW-- we're members at an indoor pool, so we can enjoy hot tubbing while ducklings splash if you like, and if you bring suits. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: MMario Date: 10 Aug 05 - 02:26 PM I think I'm glad, sorry - wrong song - Glad I took tuesday off! |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: Micca Date: 10 Aug 05 - 03:39 PM MMario, Not Entirely wrong, on a couple of recent occassions when I have sung it, Geoff, armed with a cookie tin lid and cake knife did his impression of a Roman!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: CET Date: 10 Aug 05 - 06:52 PM Geoff the Duck: WYSIWYG lives in Pennsylvania, which is home to Troegs' Pale Ale, one of the best beers in the world, IMHO. It's sold in Harrisburg and Gettysburg, though, so I don't know if it's available where WYSIWYG and Hardiman live. In my experience, the U.S. is crawling with good breweries - it's just that they're small and don't get the distribution of Coors, etc. Check out Whitby, by all means, but you may not find much to remind you of Whitby, England. Charmion and I hope to be at the Getaway and we would be glad to talk to you about your idea of moving to Canada. Of course, we only know a small part of it! Edmund |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: wysiwyg Date: 10 Aug 05 - 07:19 PM CET, if you and Charmion are here when the Ducks are, you can tell them ALL about Canada. I do know there is a porter available here, but I can't recall the brand. (Blame Alaska Mike for getting me hooked on it!) ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: Charlie Baum Date: 10 Aug 05 - 07:40 PM If you drive from the Getaway to WYSIWYG's, you will necessarily pass through Harrisburg, where the above mentioned Troeg's Pale Ale is available. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: wysiwyg Date: 10 Aug 05 - 07:44 PM I'm not sure Mmario goes that way-- what's your route, Leo? ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: MMario Date: 11 Aug 05 - 10:29 AM well, I admit I usually go AROUND Harrisburg - but the ducks don't have to drive wingman - the route is pretty easy. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: Geoff the Duck Date: 11 Aug 05 - 05:20 PM CET - I have friends who have spoken highly of American micro-breweries and their products, but they have also pointed out that because of the near momopoly of a couple of gigantic companies, that they can be difficult to find. Hence my asking now, so that you know that we are interested in the good stuff, and would wish to sample some of it. I would also be intested in knowing about other brews along our route when we have got a more concrete itinerary. Quack! Geoff. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: CET Date: 11 Aug 05 - 09:51 PM If your itinerary takes you to Ottawa, we can definitely introduce you to a few good beers (maybe some musicians too). Edmund |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: GUEST Date: 11 Aug 05 - 11:29 PM Ummmm... I missed the part where you come to the actual SOUTH???!! Dani in North Carolina |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: MMario Date: 12 Aug 05 - 10:18 AM Well - Maryland is more south then England. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: Mrs.Duck Date: 12 Aug 05 - 12:42 PM Yes we do FLY south although most of the trip is probably not but then I've always been geographically challenged. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: Mrs.Duck Date: 12 Aug 05 - 12:48 PM Actually looking at the world map I think it is all south of here but admittedly Ducks Fly West would be more accurate. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: PoohBear Date: 12 Aug 05 - 07:07 PM There were two irish men out hunting ducks. For five days they sat by the lake side and saw hundreds of ducks fly over - but they got not a one. On the sixth day one turns to the other and says 'Michael, we've been sitting here for 5 days, seen thousands of ducks fly by but we've got not a one. What is wrong?'. Michael says 'I don't know, John. Do you think we're throwing the dogs high enough?' . . . . PB |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: Geoff the Duck Date: 12 Aug 05 - 07:41 PM Go West sounds too much like the Village People...... Quack! GtD. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: Mrs.Duck Date: 15 Aug 05 - 10:33 AM Can I be the chief? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: wysiwyg Date: 15 Aug 05 - 10:36 AM Please do!!!!!!!!!!!! ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: wysiwyg Date: 22 Aug 05 - 01:02 PM Refresh ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: BaldEagle2 Date: 23 Aug 05 - 09:08 AM When ducks fly south, you might have noticed that they always fly in a V formation. If you observe carefully, you will see that one arm of the V is always longer than the other arm of the V. Do you know why this is? It is because the longer arm of the V usually has more ducks in it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: gnu Date: 23 Aug 05 - 09:20 AM An odd duck? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: Rapparee Date: 23 Aug 05 - 09:46 AM Ya know, the myth that good American beer is hard to find is hard to deal with. Sure, we have Budweiser and Coors and Millers, but there is also Sam Adams, Alaska Amber, Polygamy Porter, Weiderman's, Sierra, Dead Guy, Moose Drool, Fat Tire (not exported because the English spell "tire" funny), Pete's, Troutslayer, and a LOT of others, some larger producers than others. And that's just the stuff made here -- and it includes IPA types, stouts, and ales as well as lagers. Canada, on the other hand, only has Molson, Moosehead, and Labatts. Right, eh? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: gnu Date: 23 Aug 05 - 09:56 AM Hehehe... at least as many as you have mentioned... and Bud, Coors, Miller, Sam Adams... and many European, Autralian, African, Indian, North American, etc, imports. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: Mrs.Duck Date: 27 Aug 05 - 11:37 AM OK BaldEagle so if they have one arm longer than the other how come they don't just fly in circles?? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: Geoff the Duck Date: 27 Aug 05 - 12:40 PM Ducks in Bradford used to fly backwards to keep the soot out of their eyes... Quack! GtD |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: gnu Date: 27 Aug 05 - 12:47 PM Minds me of the "Bird of Diminishing Returns" which flies in ever increasinglt smaller circles... until it flies up it's own ass and disappears. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: GUEST,Geoff the Duck Date: 28 Aug 05 - 02:50 PM Over here we used to have the Oozalum Bird which flew anticlockwise until it disappeared up its own fundament. It was often found in company with the Mugwump Bird which would sit on a fence with its mug on one side and its wump on the other... Quack!! Geoff |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: MMario Date: 29 Aug 05 - 08:50 AM test drove the route the doucks will be flying north after getaway - tested the dorm; the kitchen. Everything seems in good order. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: Mrs.Duck Date: 29 Aug 05 - 10:11 AM What would we do without you? :0) |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: MMario Date: 29 Aug 05 - 10:14 AM heck - mick knows the way. *grin* |
Subject: RE: BS: Ducks Fly South From: Beer Date: 29 Aug 05 - 10:16 PM Don't know what it is like where you folks live, but here in Quebec you can go to the local corner store and pick up a six pack of beer , wine or whatever up to 11 at night. In some stores maybe later. No need for bootleggers. O. K. Rapaire, I'll bite... You know very well we have great beer here in Canada. In fact, we even have that training beer so as to please our American friends(Just kidding of course.). We have Porter, Stout, and some great Micro Brewery stuff that is really pleasing. All to say that when you folks visit, a cold one will be available. Beer |
