Subject: RE: BS: Leonard Cohen Broke From: bobad Date: 06 Nov 05 - 08:07 PM Leonard Cohen's Seven Immutable Laws of Business. BY KEN KRIMSTEIN - - - - One: If it seems like it's too heavy, it is too heavy—unless it's your brother, in which case, he ain't too heavy. Two: If the rain is flowing like tears from the sky, call in sick—it's cool. Three: There's nothing you can do behind your desk that can't be more effectively accomplished with a beautiful, long-haired, chain-smoking woman lying naked next to you in bed. Four: It really is a good idea to import tea and oranges all the way from China—especially the way the world is going these days. Five: Scrap all the words like "maximize," "incentivize," "amortize," "enhance," "enable," and "team-building" from your vocabulary and replace them with "sorrow." Six: Suits are cool, as long as you wear them without shoes or socks. Seven: Yearning, that's the ticket. Yearning and heartache. Yearning and heartache and longing and—well, you get it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Leonard Cohen Broke From: Domnull Date: 31 Aug 05 - 04:51 AM There is sadly a real lack of any of Leonard's work on video/DVD. But - have a look at this site - it's a good catalogue of his material and offers the opportunity to get hold of some of it. LC material |

Subject: RE: BS: Leonard Cohen Broke From: Lonesome EJ Date: 19 Aug 05 - 02:13 AM In 1978 I met a very attractive lady at a rock n roll bar who told me she was a professional entertainer, and then disappeared into the night. When a friend of mine got married, we had his bachelor party at Sid King's Crazy Horse Bar in Denver. Lo and behold, there was the lady, ready to entertain us. In a spotlight she removed all of her clothes while the speakers played Leonard Cohen's Suzanne. I became an instant fan. I wish him the best. |
Subject: RE: BS: Leonard Cohen Broke From: bobad Date: 18 Aug 05 - 07:36 PM Some radio and TV clips of the melancholy one here. |
Subject: RE: BS: Leonard Cohen Broke From: Severn Date: 18 Aug 05 - 06:13 PM New West records and some others have been releasing some CDs and videos of old Austin City Limits appearences, maybe they will release the hour show they did of him some years ago. I have a tape of the radio simulcast. It was good, and live, he actually shows a sense of humor that never showed on records. |

Subject: RE: BS: Leonard Cohen Broke From: Paco Rabanne Date: 18 Aug 05 - 05:40 AM Yo Adam, dunno about DVD but there is a VHS video available of his last appearance at The Albert Hall, around 1988. There is also a BBC video 'Arenas' profile of him. I had them both at one time, dunno where there are now. A friend of mine also has some videos of German performances. Even strawberries get it! |

Subject: RE: BS: Leonard Cohen Broke From: pdq Date: 17 Aug 05 - 06:41 PM Broke? That's not hard to believe. I've always thought he was held together by Krazy Glue. |

Subject: RE: BS: Leonard Cohen Broke From: Charmion Date: 17 Aug 05 - 03:59 PM My dear old sergeant used to say, "One man, one kit", which means if it's yours, you carry it. If someone else has to carry it, he'll get to thinking it's his. Sounds to me like Mr Cohen handed his money to his manager and went off to do his own thing. Didn't surprise me a bit to find out that the geld melted while he wasn't looking. |

Subject: RE: BS: Leonard Cohen Broke From: Clinton Hammond Date: 17 Aug 05 - 02:03 PM Once again, from Hunter S Thompson "The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side." Good luck Len.... I'll play the benefit concert if ya need me to |

Subject: RE: BS: Leonard Cohen Broke From: Big Al Whittle Date: 17 Aug 05 - 04:16 AM the only nice thing about the music business is the music, as Kay russell used to say. as Mr Cohen's fellow canadian wrote , you leave 'em laughing when you go. It always reminds me of Hyman Roth's dictum in Godfather 2, THIS IS THE BUSINESS WE ARE ENGAGED IN. terribly sad! his government should should step in and not let something terrible happen to an old man who has been such a great and proud ambassador of his country's culture. |
Subject: RE: BS: Leonard Cohen Broke From: Clinton Hammond Date: 16 Aug 05 - 10:44 PM Maybe it'll get him out on a whirl-wind world tour! |
Subject: RE: BS: Leonard Cohen Broke From: robomatic Date: 16 Aug 05 - 09:57 PM Let's toss this thread right back into the music section: by the Austin Lounge Lizards: Leonard Cohen's Day Job And the album it's from is well worth having, in fact, any of their albums is well worth having. |
Subject: RE: BS: Leonard Cohen Broke From: Little Hawk Date: 16 Aug 05 - 09:25 PM Good Lord. What a crummy turn of events for Mr Cohen. I hope he recoups some of his lost money. |
Subject: RE: BS: Leonard Cohen Broke From: Beer Date: 16 Aug 05 - 08:12 PM Met the man. Early seventies. Did a show for the patients at a psych. hospital in Montreal. I taped the show and still have it. He was working on his second album and sang songs that hadn't been released as yet. His ability to communicate with the audience was better than most psychiatrist I know. Great underground tape. Maybe I should try and contact him. Possiable he could use my help. What a bummer for him. Beer |
