Subject: BS: Avian Flu...not good news From: Shanghaiceltic Date: 17 Aug 05 - 08:19 PM Having been here when SARS was a problem and seeing the slow response and denial of potential problem by the old gits in Beijing this one worries me more and more. I have been following a number of news stories here in China and the response by the OG's is still the same, they think they can control it. This article is quite frightening and I do not know whether it is scare mongering in order to sell the book or whether this man has hit the crux of the problem in that birds migrate and soon we will be in the migration season. Subject: RE: BS: Avian Flu...not good news From: John MacKenzie Date: 18 Aug 05 - 05:07 AM I tell you quite frankly folks, this one scares the shit out of me. The only possible good outcome I can see is at least it will ease the pressure on world resources when it kills thousands of people; and it will. Giok |

Subject: RE: BS: Avian Flu...not good news From: Paul Burke Date: 18 Aug 05 - 06:05 AM Trouble is, when the (inevitable?) plague comes, it will not only drastically reduce the population, but lead to a breakdown of society in many areas. This is more-or-less what happened after the Black Death, but this time the crazies will have nukes, nerve gas and biological weapons. |

Subject: RE: BS: Avian Flu...not good news From: Stilly River Sage Date: 18 Aug 05 - 10:35 AM We used Tamiflu when that California strain of the flu hit last year (nothing for it in the flu vaccine that turned out so scarce just a couple of days after my kids both got their shots). My daughter didn't get Tamiflu as early as my son when her flu hit, and she had more symptoms before it knocked it down. They still had to get over the cough, but it wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been. Thanks for the reminder to order some in advance. Ironically, I wasn't able to get the flu shot, and I took care of sick kids for weeks (they didn't catch it concurrently, that would have been too easy) and I didn't catch it at all. Wash your hands, cover your face when you cough or sneeze, and don't leave your facial tissues all over, have a receptacle for them and use it! SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Avian Flu...not good news From: mack/misophist Date: 18 Aug 05 - 10:44 AM Paul Burk: The Black Death is a bad comparison. Try the Spanish Influenza Pandemic. Note: It's been determined that the original Spanish Flu was an early form of Swine Flu. Same general family of bugs. |
