So how did he do at the Ottawa Folk Festival? Any one know? Just following up on a thread that came up before the festival took place.

That link leads to a discussion forum, where you have to be a member to sign in. The notion of a Canadian Idol winner being a top act confirms everything I find irritating about the Ottawa Folk Festival. So, am I wrong? Is there more to Kalan Porter than the bleating and grimacing that the Idol contestants seem to think are what makes a real singer?

After the previous thread on the subject, I too am curious. Been away from regular Mudville attendance so I might have missed something.

Peace, Mooh (home for a couple of days).

Went up on Saturday morning and left at 6 p.m. Enjoyed several acts and was taken by a young group from New York. They go by the name of "Crescent and Frost".
However, following up on "Cet" comment. I do have something that bothered me. Just before paying the entrance fee, I was approached by a young lady and asked if I listened to C.B.C., I said yes and then I began getting a speech about the current labor dispute. I held up my hand and said that I was here for the musice and not politics. About 5 feet further there was a table with a lady sitting behind and one in front shaking a can that held some coins. The poster besides the table said something about "Food Bank". Then about another 5 feet I was directed to a table to pay my $30.00 for a day pass.
I know that "CUPE" (Canadian Union of Public Employees)is the major sponsor of the festival and as well a food bank is of great importance, but to hit you just as your coming in left me with a bad taste. Maybe because I am a festival organizer and I keep looking for ideas to improve our festival.

True. Much like Mudcat -- registration requires only a user name and e-dress -- but you have to register to read as well as to post. (I find that's often true online just to read newspaper articles. In fact, many online news sites require a helluva lot more than that.)

I haven't followed Kalan's career or music, but from what I've read he's extraordinarily talented vocally and instrumentally.

Much as I detest many (most) aspects of the "Idol" franchise and its associated (19E/BMG) machine, there have still been some really talented kids who have gotten their big break into the music business via one or another of the "Idol" shows worldwide.    I think Kalan may be one of the good guys.

If I were on DSL instead of dial-up, I'd have access to downloads of Kalan to let me judge for myself.
