Subject: Treasury of Folk Music From: dwditty Date: 04 Jan 99 - 04:47 PM I saw a CD - Treasury of Folk Music - advertised on one of the "Support Mudcat" Links, but now I cannot locate it. Of all things, this is a Time-Life release of about 60 folk songs, many of which I would like to learn. Any help locating it is appreciated. |

Subject: RE: Treasury of Folk Music From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Jan 99 - 05:51 PM Well, dwditty, I couldn't find it at any of the Mudcat sponsors, either. The only place I know of that has it is Collectors' Choice Music, (800)923-1122. The two-CD sets are $24.95 per volume; and there are now 4 volumes, with 30 songs per volume. Their catalog has a package deal for volumes 1 & 2 ($44.95), but I didn't see one for 3 & 4 on their online catalog. Maybe they have a package deal for all four if you call. I thought long and hard about getting it, but too many of the songs were duplicates of what I already had in the Smithsonian Folk Song America and the Warner Troubadours of the Folk Era collections. sounds like the Time-Life collection is a better deal, but it wasn't available when I bought what I've got. Interestingly, Time-Life only has volumes 1 & 2 available on their Web site. You'd probably be much better off inviting Bill D and Barry Finn over to sing you all the songs from Rise Up Singing, you know...... -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Treasury of Folk Music From: Pete M Date: 04 Jan 99 - 06:50 PM Hi Joe, Dwditty, I just followed Joe's link to the Time Life site and found a listing of the titles on all four volumes and the four CD set listed as available for purchase, but no price. I clicked on Music at the initial page and then down near the bottom of the drop down menu was the "Treasury of folk music". Don't know if that helps but it looks a good collection. Pete M |

Subject: RE: Treasury of Folk Music From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Jan 99 - 07:21 PM Hi, Pete - the Time-Life site was confusing to me. What they call four volumes appears to be 4 CD's, what Collector's Choice refers to as volumes 1 and 2 (2 CD's each). Seems that Time-Life is about as unclear online as it is on TV - they make it really hard to figure out what the total cost is. I guess there must be lots of people willing to buy without knowing the price. I don't like it, though. If you go to Collectors' Choice and look at the songs in volumes 3 and 4, you might wonder if they are what we would call folk music. Lovin' Spoonful singing "Do You Believe in Magic"? Feliciano singing "Light My Fire"? I kinda like a number of the songs, but calling them "folk music" just doesn't feel right. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Treasury of Folk Music From: Pete M Date: 04 Jan 99 - 08:40 PM Hi Joe, yes I agree about the Time life site, I certainly assumed that Four volumes equated to the four CD's listed, and I wouldn't buy them without knowing the price delivery charges etc no matter how good they are. Just be thankful that the ones on the Collector's Choice site didn't include any Niel Diamond songs!!!! Pete M |

Subject: RE: Treasury of Folk Music From: dwditty Date: 04 Jan 99 - 08:51 PM Hey, thanks guys. I placed an order at Collectors' Choice. I'll have to wait and see what happens as they were listed as on backorder. BTW, my reaction at the TimeLife site was the same - didn't want to buy without knowing the terms. Thanks again. dw |

Subject: RE: Treasury of Folk Music From: Bill D Date: 05 Jan 99 - 06:06 PM (almost didn't even look at this thread) *big grin*..sure, Joe, I'll sing 'em most of the songs from RUS, as soon as I edit out all the absolutely GLARING errors (no, not 'folk-processed'...errors!!)and hackneyed arrangments...(well, maybe there's a few in there I would NEVER sing)...can't speak for Barry... |

Subject: RE: Treasury of Folk Music From: Spike the Grate Date: 11 Jan 00 - 03:11 PM Does anybody have the complete lyrics to Guantanamera and/or La Bamba? bikerchick-spike@home.com thanks |

Subject: RE: Treasury of Folk Music From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Jan 00 - 04:12 PM Hi, Spike - It's always best to search the Mudcat before requesting a song. We have one verse of Guantanamera in the database - click here, and I'll see if I can find the rest for you. I did - click here Click here for "La Bamba." It's better not to mix topics in a thread like this. Becky did the same thing above, and it just confuses matters. Please start a new thread, if you can't find what you need by searching our site. We do our best to help everybody. -Joe Offer (also sent by e-mail)- |
