The song "Pig Latin Rag" was mentioned in another thread, but no reference appears here at Mudcat. A Google also fails to find it. Any help please? Also some notes on what tune.

Just from the title that sounds like a hoot-and-a-half!! I'd like to hear that myself.

Loudermilk did one named "Pig Latin Song".

Link here.

PIG LATIN SONG
(John D. Loudermilk)
BOB LUMAN (WARNER BROS. 5204, 1961)

Oink-oink, oink-oink
Two little piggies go walkin'
Two little piggies go talkin'
Down the lane, hand in hand each day
The he-piggy steals a kiss from her
And then starts to whisper
And this is what the little piggies say

Iay, Iay ovelay...
Iay ovelay ouyay ithway all of my heart
Iay ovelay ouyay ithway all of my heart
Darling please tell me that we'll never never part
If you're not hip or if you don't understand
They're sayin' I love you in P-I-G-L-A-T-I-N
Oh yeah, Iay, Iay ovelay
Iay ovelay ouyay ithway all of my heart
Iay ovelay ouyay ithway all of my heart
Darling please tell me that we'll never never part

Me and my baby go walkin'
Me and my baby go talkin'
Down the lane, hand in hand each day
I steal a kiss from her
And then we're startin' to whisper
And this is what, what we have to say

Iay, Iay ovelay...
Iay ovelay ouyay ithway all of my heart
Iay ovelay ouyay ithway all of my heart
Darling please tell me that we'll never never part
If you're not hip or if you don't understand
They're sayin' I love you in P-I-G-L-A-T-I-N
Oh yeah, Iay, Iay ovelay
Iay ovelay ouyay ithway all of my heart
Iay ovelay ouyay ithway all of my heart
Darling please tell me that we'll never never part
Please tell me that we'll never never part
Please tell me that we'll never never part
[Fade]

Pig Latin: secret language in which the first letter or syllable of a word is transferred to the end, and the syllable "ay" is added. Thus "Iay ovelay ouyay ithway" becomes "I love you with (all of my heart)"

I don't know if that was the one intended, but it's a good one.

That site, like many others nowadays is not searchable from outside, had never heard of that site.

Thanks.

I heard the Pig Latin Rag at Confluence Science Fiction convention in Pittsburgh. Go to the Parsec Web Page, (That's Pittsburgh Area Realtime Science Fiction Club) and look for the guy in charge of the filking at the con this year. He'll know how to get in touch with the singer. He may likewise have the lyrics to the Pig Latin Rag.

Leadbelly recorded PIG LATIN SONG. This is pieced together from some sound samples:

[Spoken] ...Down home they call it "Dog Latin" but here they call it "Pig Latin." You go down home and say "Pig Latin" and people wouldn't know what you're talkin' 'bout, you know, but if you say "Dog Latin" they know just what you're talkin' 'bout. Now I'm 'o' sing this in Pig Latin but I'm 'o' tell you what I'm 'o' sing to ya before I sing, so you get it. I'm 'o' sing "come here" in Pig Latin. I'm 'o' say "Come here. I got something to tell you that you oughta know. Come here. I have something to tell you that you oughta know." I'll sing it to you in Pig Latin.

Ome-cay ere-hay. Ome-cay ere-hay.
Et-lay e-may ell-tay ou-yay
Omething-say at-thay ou-yay oughta-way ow-knay.
Ome-cay ere-hay. Et-lay e-may
Ell-tay ou-yay....

Thanks for your lead Jim

I know from experience at this place that if a request thread exists for long enough, that almost anything is probably possible, including that the original author may come back from their grave to answer it!

I thought there might be more about Pig Latin on Mudcat. I just found this example of it being put to serious use in Palestinian Arabic songs:

This song is composed of two Tarweedeh songs which the women folk singers used to sing with secret messages in them by adding the letter ‘laam’ with every word to distort it. They used these secret messages through songs to give messages to their men who were imprisoned and give them instructions on their prison break. SubhanAllah, the resistance has been there way longer than we think in Palestine.

12. Pig Latin Song
(Ledbetter) from Smithsonian Folkways 40068
Lead Belly Sings for Children

At one time pig Latin (called "dog Latin" in the South) was very popular as a kind of children's secret language. It has nothing to do with Latin. Words are transformed by taking the first consonant and putting it at the end of the word, adding "ay" to it. Thus "you" becomes "ou-yay." "Come here" becomes "Ome-cay ere-hay." This must be one of the few songs totally in pig Latin.

"I'm gonna do a number in pig Latin.... Down home they call it 'dog Latin,' but up here they call it 'pig Latin.' You go down home and say 'pig Latin,' people wouldn't know what you are talking about. If you say 'dog Latin,' they know just exactly what you are talking about. Now I'm gonna sing this in pig Latin, but I am going to tell you exactly what I am going to sing to you before I sing so you can get it. I'm gonna say 'Come here' in pig Latin. I'm gonna say,
'Come here, I got something to tell you that you ought to know.'
'Come here, I got something to tell you that you ought to know.'
I'm gonna sing it to you in pig Latin."
      Ome-cay, ere-hay, ome-cay, ere-hay
      Et-lay, e-may, ell-tay, ou-yay
      Omething-say, at-thay, ou-yay, ought-ay,
      o-tay, ow-knay (repeat)
      Et-lay, e-may
      (Repeat Ome-cay, etc., twice)
      Ow-knay, ow-knay.

Isn't this the same as what Cockneys call "Back-Chat"?
