"I regret the president's decision," said Kennedy.

"One of the things the American people are very concerned about is shabby work and that certainly is true about the families whose houses are going to be rebuilt and buildings that are going to be restored," Kennedy said."

I've no doubt the contractors are more in need of increased profits than those trying to gain work after their lives have been ruined...

While other countries are offering assistance, your governement are already looking for ways to make the rich (who were going to gain anyway) richer and the poor poorer out of this disaster.

And here's the worst part of order: prevailing wages in the "area" where the work will be performed...

Anyone familiar with what folks earn in the southern "red" states? Not much compared to other parts of the country so the wages we're talkin' 'bout here are New Orleans wages... And who will be earnin' them? Folks from other areas where not onlt the wages better but the cost of housing is higher... What does this mean? Well, accordin' to the Wes Ginny Slide Rule, many skilled folks who will be doing this rebuilding will be taking pay cuts...

(But, Bobert, no one is holding a gun to their head makin' 'um go down there to work...)

No, that's right, they can elect to quit their employers and jeoprodize the 20 'er so years they have in with the company and maybe loose whatever retirement they have coming...

And the really stupid power struggle goes on in the government. This happened two days ago, on Thursday. Someone didn't get their USDA form signed, so they're not going to let aid through. Like mad cow disease is a real problem in Germany, right?

German Plane With Katrina Aid Turned Back

BERLIN - A German military plane carrying 15 tons of military rations for survivors of Hurricane Katrina was sent back by U.S. authorities, officials said Saturday. The plane was turned away Thursday because it did not have the required authorization, a German government spokesman said.

The spokesman, speaking on customary condition of anonymity, declined to comment on a report in the German news magazine Der Spiegel that U.S. authorities refused the delivery on the grounds that the NATO military rations could carry mad cow disease.

The spokesman said U.S. authorities had since given approval for future aid flights, but it was unclear whether the German military would try again to deliver the rations.

Since Hurricane Katrina struck the United States, many international donors have complained of frustration that bureaucratic entanglements have hindered shipments to the United States.

A U.S. Embassy official, who agreed to discuss the matter only if not quoted by name, blamed the German flight's rejection on temporary technical and logistical problems that have accompanied recovery operations in the devastated region.

German military planes have flown several loads of rations to the Gulf Coast. Berlin is also sending teams equipped with high-capacity pumps to help clear floodwaters.

Yep, this is a prime example for you friggin' Bushites as to the difference in perspective and why we are cynical. Pay attention, I will talk slow.

He immediately took action to make sure that the workers get paid less. Can't have them taking advantage of a disaster by earning a fair wage, y'know. Two thoughts occur to me though. First off, the folks that will be working for the substandard wages and bene's are the same folks that were hit by the hurricane and need the money to recover. Secondly, I must have missed the part where GWB also suspended the rights of the employers to make record profits. What? You mean he didn't limit their ability to make money on this??? Just the workers who were hit by this??? Must be some mistake, he says with tongue planted firmly in cheek.

    what's up with that?!! Yet again? Gee, can somebody explain to me is it true that halliburton is involved in this latest disaster? After the obvious "fair hiring" of halliburton to rebuild Iraq and coincidentally lining the pockets of Cheney & his cronies? (is it rebuilt yet? how much has halliburton made so far on that project?) Am I to understand that amongst all the companies available, halliburton has once again been chosen as THE conctractor (or one of the contractors) for the hurricane katrina clean-up? I just don't get it. The term "carpetbaggers" comes into mind. The real carpetbagger is the one who decides to ensure that the people who need jobs the most get paid the least.
