Subject: RE: Searching for Lambs Recommendations From: The Borchester Echo Date: 09 Sep 05 - 05:47 AM There's a lovely, very unusual version of Searching For Lambs on Mary Humphreys & Anahata's latest CD Floating Verses (WildGoose WGS 322CD) collected by Cecil Sharp from Mrs Bray in Langport, Somerset, in 1904. |

Subject: RE: Searching for Lambs Recommendations From: GUEST,robinia@eskimo.com Date: 09 Sep 05 - 07:02 AM The only recording I've heard is way old -- Andrew Rowan Summers on a Folkways LP (The Unquiet Grave) -- do the revivalists have the same modal melody? |
Subject: RE: Searching for Lambs Recommendations From: Bat Goddess Date: 09 Sep 05 - 07:53 AM The Voice Squad recorded it, too. Been meaning to learn it for years as I really like the tune but I don't like the tune paired with "Cherry Tree Carol." Linn |
Subject: RE: Searching for Lambs Recommendations From: GUEST,Dazbo Date: 09 Sep 05 - 08:04 AM Jane and Amanda Threlfall do a good version and Steeleye Span did a not so good version of it. For such a 'perfect' folk song it doesn't seem to have been recorded too often (perhaps because it's not in D or G and is in 5/4 time, heehee). Best sung unaccompanied in my view. Darren |
Subject: RE: Help: Searching for Lambs recording From: reynard Date: 03 Oct 11 - 06:30 AM Actually I like the Steeleye Span. You can find lots of versions on Spotify. Can I recommend Peter Bellamy? Although he overdoes the ornamentation a little. Also June Tabor, Bella Hardy...is that enough? For guitarists who are brave enough to tackle 5/4, check out Nancy Kerr and James Fagan. I'm learning this is in F sus4 tuning (CFCFBbC)and although I'm a novice at open tunings this just plays itself. If you follow the melody the time takes care of itself. The only issue is what to do in the gaps. It's fun (but more difficult) to keep the 5 count throughout but my impression is that traditional singers don't count the pauses so the time is flexible; so there may be the odd bar of 2 or 3 in the breathing spaces. Of course if you are playing with other people you need to be clear and consistent! Anyone out there got any thoughts about that? |
Subject: RE: Help: Searching for Lambs recording From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 03 Oct 11 - 10:01 AM I don't find any songs called 'Lambs' in the usual places. Are y'all talking about this one? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5TNirKjhJM If so, I don't think it's in 5/4. |
Subject: RE: Help: Searching for Lambs recording From: Tootler Date: 03 Oct 11 - 11:34 AM Plenty of versions on You Tube. I agree with Guest, Dazbo. It's best sung unaccompanied. I liked this version. |
Subject: RE: Help: Searching for Lambs recording From: GUEST,henryp Date: 03 Oct 11 - 01:28 PM There's a lovely version by Polly Bolton on her CD Woodbine and Ivy. She is accompanied by John Shepherd and Steve Dunachie - they made a stunning trio. |

Subject: RE: Help: Searching for Lambs recording From: davidkiddnet Date: 17 Dec 12 - 12:57 AM I have seen it printed in 5/4 time right through but it messes up the downbeat at the end. It should be written with bar 5 and bar 9 in 3/4 time.
