One need not be a helicopter pilot to be heroic but it is important to praise the unselfish acts of many that are in such stark contrast to the inaction and lack of imaginaation of authorities.

CANADIAN AIRCREW MEDEVACS WOMAN FROM NORWEGIAN MAJESTY

BOSTON - A Canadian aircrew assisting Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod
medically evacuated a 76-year-old woman from the cruise ship Norwegian
Majesty by CH-146 Griffon helicopter, 55 nautical miles southeast of
Nantucket, Mass., 1:35 p.m., today.

The Coast Guard received a call from the Norwegian Majesty, which is en
route to Boston from Bermuda, via satellite cellular phone requesting a
medevac of a woman with abdominal distress to Cape Cod Hospital located in
Hyannis, Mass.   

The Griffon will transport the woman to Hyannis airport, where an awaiting
ambulance will take her to Cape Cod Hospital. The Griffon is on schedule to
land at the airport around 3:15 p.m.

Canadian aircrews and two Griffon helicopters have been assigned to Air
Station Cape Cod for nearly a week to assist while Coast Guard aircraft and
air station personnel continue to be deployed to the Gulf Coast region.

Credit where much credit is due:

These folks have been doing yeoman service in rescuing people from New Orleans and taking them to where they need to go, often reuniting families. Saw something about them on the tube last night. As I understand it, this is a group of private plane owners (mostly small planes like Cessnas, Navions, etc., usually four-seaters) who are shuttling back and forth from the New Orleans area to other parts of the country. A few charitable organizations, such as McDonald House, help to support what they're doing, but for the most part, it's on their own dime. Private citizens.

Angels indeed!

I guess they've been around for awhile. Most of what they do is provide transportation for people who need emergency health care, and for other emergency needs. They've made themselves available to aid in the current situation. Info on their web site.

And as I understand it, they didn't ask permission from FEMA or any other government agency, they just started doing it. Sometimes that's the sort of thing one has to do when those who are "in charge" are either on vacation or running around like headless chickens.

Attention writers:

On MSNBC 'the ethical edge' there has been a discussion along with footage of the most desperate disaster workers and victims.
All the most salient points and controversies that we discussed on mudcat were there word for word. Example : finders vs. looters, class&race were a disgrace, empty promises, the quarantine of New Orleans and the Dome.

I urge the best writers here to look into the heroic suicide of the chief of police in New Orleans. I say heroic because he could not live with the genocidal acts of his fellow officers.

I listened to a NO victim on NPR who lived through the intentional blocking of exit from New Olreans by the police.
I found a link supporting her heart rendering firt hand experience but it is by no means as compelling as her telling it.

A drama showing the unfolding savagery of the police preventing people from crossing the bridge into West NO and the resulting genocide at the Dome is a story that needs to be told.

If it can be told from the police chief's point of view, whose life ended in suicide, the true pathos of the situation can be rendered with honesty and forgiveness without being polemic.

Please refer this story/threadlink to writers who have the ability to research and dramatize the events effectively.

A tribute to the heroic judge who overturned the suspension of the 1st ammendment by the Admiral in charge of disaster recovery operations.

Yesterday the Coast Guard Admiral declared that no press or embeds were allowed to view the recovery of the dead. Today an official announcement claimed that the dead are far far fewer than all previous estimates.

A state judge however overruled the Admiral claiming that it was unconstitutional to bar the press from Louisiana.

good for you judge! You made a small stand against fascism today.
