Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Boogie Woogie ??????????????? From: Jim Dixon Date: 30 Oct 11 - 01:27 PM The line "I hope you're satisfied, you rascal you"—quoted in the first message—makes it seem that this is a parody GOODY GOODY by Johnny Mercer and Matt Malneck. However, the rest of the lines that are quoted here don't seem to fit the meter of GOODY GOODY. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Boogie Woogie ??????????????? From: Jim Dixon Date: 28 Oct 11 - 01:07 PM I have listened to RE-BOP BOOGIE performed by Benny Carter and his Orchestra, and it's all instrumental—no singing. It's on the album "1946-1948" (Classics CD 1043, 1999), which I can hear via Spotify. |

From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 26 Oct 11 - 08:19 AM According to this Russian site - Benny Carter - it looks as if Benny Carter recorded the original song as Re-Bop Boogie in 1946. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Boogie Woogie ??????????????? From: GUEST,Bill Date: 26 Oct 11 - 07:43 AM Here is the version I learned (although I can't remember one line completely). It was sung pretty fast until you got the the "drive me to my grave" which was VERY slow. Went down the cellar, to get a bottle of cider, There sat a junebug jacking off a spider. It's a dirty, dirty boogie that's what I crave. Dirty, dirty boogie gonna drive me to my grave. Went back down, ??? There sat the junebug doing it again. It's a dirty, dirty boogie that's what I crave. Dirty, dirty boogie gonna drive me to my grave. Mama in the kitchen, Papa in jail. Sister on the corner singing "pussy for sale". It's a dirty, dirty boogie that's what I crave. Dirty, dirty boogie gonna drive me to my grave. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Boogie Woogie ??????????????? From: Azizi Date: 25 Jul 08 - 02:39 AM In re-reading my post, I just realized that although the children I have heard recite this verse always say "he had a piece of glass stuck up his butt" the two versions that I posted say "i stuck a piece of glass up his {ass}". All these years that I have heard this rhyme recited {since 1997} I've been trying to figure out why James Brown has a piece of glass stuck in his butt. I'm such a nice girl that it didn't occur to me that someone stick some glass up his butt. Btw, I think the reference to "James Brown" in this rhyme dates back to old children's rhymes about Buster Brown and later Charlie Brown going downtown... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Boogie Woogie ??????????????? From: Azizi Date: 25 Jul 08 - 02:23 AM Thanks to all who have posted information & lyrics about those songs that predate Rockn Robin. I've been trying to track down the earliest sources that I can for selected American {particularly African American} children's playground rhymes. I think this nails the sources for verses of Rockin Robin, which is usually called "Tweeleelee" {or some similarly spelled and pronounced word} in many African American communities throughout the USA {since 1972, when Michael Jackson recorded his version of "Rockin Robin"}. For those interested, I have posted 10 versions of "Tweeleelee" on website. Most of these examples were sent in by that site's visitors. Here's the link to that page: http://cocojams.com/handclap_rhymes.htm ** I'm curious if anyone knows if a similar verse to this one below is part of any of those old songs that you've mentioned: Here's the verse found in many versions of the children's handclap rhyme Tweeleelee {alternate words in given in parenthesis} I went downtown to get a stick of butta {butter} I saw James Brown layin {or "sittin", or "poopin", one version I collected from a Black fraternity/sorority website suggested that the word here was F**king} In the gutta {gutter} He had a piece of glass Stuck up his ass {though most children either say "butt" or they completely omit that word} I never saw a Black man {this is probably the clean substitute for the n-word} run so fast. -snip- Here's an example of the entire handclap rhyme, with no changes to the poster's spelling/typos: swing swing swing to te usa hey hey rockin in atreeto all day long huffin and a puffin and singin that song all the lil birdies on jaybird street love to here therobins go tweet tweet tweet rockin robintweet tweetalee rockin robin tweet tweetalee mama in he kitchen cookin fried rice daddy oUt side shootin some dice brothA in jail drinkin gingerale sista roun te corner sellin FRUIT COCTAIL rockin robin tweet tweetalee rockin robin tweet tweetalee batman and robin flyin in the air batman lost his underwear batmn said i dont care cause robingoin to by me azillion more pair rockinrobin tweet tweetalee iwent down town to getsum btta saw james brown sittin ina gutta gotta piece of glass stuck it up his i neva seen a black man runso fast rockinrobin tweet tweet alee -j-mil; 3/19/2005 ; {African American male; Maryland http://blog.oftheoctopuses.com/000518.php ** Here's another version of that "last" verse along with the poster's comments: i went down town to get a stick of butter and saw james brown sitting (people cursed on my block) in the gutter i took a piece of glass and stuck it up his (you know what) i never saw a (kids are mean) run so fast. we even played that in college. hmmm...those hand games were violent and had curses in them, huh? holla at me if you remember -MaMaBuddha; {African American female}; Harlem {New York, New York}; 7/31/2000} http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/archive/index.php/t-5627.html ** Thanks, again for the interesting information about the possible {probable?} sources for the song & the handclap rhyme Rockin Robin {Yweeleelee}! |

"I tuck her in the kitchen And I laid her on the floor" & "Well she boogied and she boogied 'Til she hung it on it on the wall" Sound remarkably close to a song Chuck Berry sang... Can't remember the title - thought it was "Reelin' and rockin'", but a search fails to link that title with what I remember. The song was on his live album - the one with the extended live version of 'my ding a ling' where he get the audience joining in... |

Subject: Lyr Add: ALA BOOGY (from 'Songs of Raunch & ,,,') From: and e Date: 22 Jul 08 - 11:30 AM Songs of Raunch and Ill-Repute page 25 has something similar to the Boogie Woogie / Rockin' Robin: ALA BOOGYNotes: It seems that the commercially successful 1958 "Rockin' Robin" song was a cleaned up version of the bawdy original. The text above is from May 1958. The "...tank full of gas ... hand full of ass" verse floats independently and has been used as a marching cadence (to the tune of "Sound Off (the Duckworth chant)". The first two verses also appear in other bawdy songs. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Boogie Woogie ??????????????? From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 13 Sep 05 - 11:13 AM Tampa Red with his Hokum Jug Band used to sing a song "I'll Be Glad When You're Dead, You Rascal You." Cab Calloway picked it up and made a hit of it. That one line does sound like yours. Here's one of perhaps half a dozen verses (and more, I'm sure, on the street): I'll be glad when you're dead, you rascal you, I'll be glad when you're dead, you rascal you, You came into my home, You wouldn't leave my wife alone! I'll be glad when you're dead you rascal you. With much more in the same vein. I'm thinking maybe Tampa did his song as a riff on that street rhyme. But your verse and chorus could also be copped off a vocal record from the 30s or even the 20s by somebody we haven't heard yet. Blind Lemon Jefferson was the first I know of to name the music with his "Booger Rooger," and the phrase was already common among hop scoppers in the 20s. His record touched off a minor imitation craze and a number of people like Lucille Bogan and some others did blues boogies. But I have never run into the refrain you cite, far as I remember. I think "Goody Goody" may have riffed off the same thing, but by then this verse form and the Boogie Woogie were well established. Because boogie woogie was just another underground term for sex, same as jassin', I expect Mercer felt he had to clean it up, or the vowels just triggered him to have a vowel movement (sorry, couldn't resist). That's how Tin Pan Alley worked. A writer would hear something hot and compose something as clean as possible in imitation of it to try to catch the prevailing ear, and Mercer was good at that. Sure would like to find out more about it, and hear more verses. Bob |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Boogie Woogie ??????????????? From: Metchosin Date: 12 Sep 05 - 01:27 PM Sounds like a parody of the jump tune Goody Goody For You by Paul Whiteman arranger, Matty Malneck, lyrics by Johnny Mercer, ca 1936. Hooray and hallelujah You had it comin' to ya Goody Goody for him Goody Goody for you And I hope you're satisfied, you rascal you! Of course the song noted may have been a cleaned up version of the bawdier one. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Boogie Woogie ??????????????? From: Azizi Date: 12 Sep 05 - 12:27 PM I don't know this song but FYI, I've collected a handclap rhyme called "Rockin Robin" [also known as "Tweedleelee"]from African American females in various United States communities. That rhyme has a very similar verse: Momma's in the kitchen cooking rice. Daddy's at home shooting dice. Brother's in jail raising bail [or pissin in the pail} Sister's in the corner sellin fruit cocktail. * -snip- * From my obeservations of girls [in Pittsburgh, PA and surrounding areas from 1997 to date] and from comments that I received from women in Pittsburgh, PA area, Erie PA, Cleveland PA, Atlanta GA, and New York, City it seems clear from the accompanying movements that children recognize the sexual implications of the phrase "fruit cocktail". The girls pat down their hips to the beat and shake their hips from side to side to when they say "fruit cocktail". I wonder if this "Boogie Woogie" song [whatever it is] contributed to this verse. |
