On the initiative of the great Vladimir Jabotinsky, the volunteer Jewish Legion was formed as the 38th and 39th Battalions of Royal Fusiliers. They became the 1st Ally to cross the Jordan River on 9/15/1918 (= Tishri 9, 5679 - but date uncertain)

          Deep river, my home is over Jordan,
          Deep river, Lord, I'm gonna cross over into campground.

9/15/1918?? But there are only 12 months in the year!

Only 12 months in certain years on certain calendars.

When it's potentially confusing, I try to remember to write out the month. But I reckon the even the most Britnocentric reader will easily figure out today's date, however it's written.

You're actually the first that's noted a problem with the convention since this series started in April but perhaps the others were just being kind.
