Phil, you're probably right about the authorship. (Memory fading here. I heard Erik sing it and I think Pat learned it from him. If that's wrong, too, I give up.) That same memory is what I am using for the chords. I heard the song once by EF and twice by Pat Sky on his "Songs That Made America Famous".

I also heard Steve Goodman sing it on one of the Midnight Special newsyear's eve live broadcasts. Don't know if that is still in the archives or not.
