Subject: RE: Mudcat gathering MD or Del. in Oct? From: Bill D Date: 21 Sep 05 - 11:24 AM just to clarify...it is the FSGW (Folklore Society of Greater Washington) annual Getaway...our private party at a camp, which we have always shared with good friends for over 30 years now. (Dick Greenhaus has been coming longer than I have) Since Mudcat Central is near, and since a number of the 'regulars' at the Getaway also frequent Mudcat, it just naturally happened that other Mudcatters(including Max) were curious and gradually joined the party....Seems like it has worked out pretty well for everyone! *grin* We have a number of local FSGW members who wouldn't be caught dead near a computer and barely know what Mudcat is.....but they seem to adapt pretty well to all these new faces...once the face opens up and songs pour out. |

From: Midchuck Date: 21 Sep 05 - 11:34 AM If PoppaGator still wants the Ma9ikal Mystery Guitar, and if anyone is going from Vermont/west central NH/eastern upstate NY who wants to make contact with me to get it and take it down, and if someone could take it to him in NJ afterward, it could be at the Getaway for use by anyone who doesn't have one. I realize that's a lot of "ifs." Peter. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat gathering MD or Del. in Oct? From: MMario Date: 21 Sep 05 - 11:34 AM whoops1 sorry, I should have had the courtesy to point that out myself - as I cetainly appreciate the fact that the FSGW has "taken us into their bosoms" - so to speak. Other then the occasional puzzled look I haven't noticed much "division" |

Subject: RE: Mudcat gathering MD or Del. in Oct? From: Big Mick Date: 21 Sep 05 - 07:50 PM I keep hearing about these folks that are troubled by all this, or puzzled by it, but I have yet to meet any. Well, maybe the occasional crabby person, but I have always seen Mudcatters as being welcome. When there has been a misunderstanding it usually stemmed from someone just not asking. Example: The Mudcatters usually stay in the same cabin. It has become a tradition with us. Some folks create in their own minds a division in this. They tell folks that our singaround is a private thing. But it never has been. We simply only get to see each other once a year. ALL ARE WELCOME, IN FACT ENCOURAGED to come sing in that cabin. If you feel excluded please let me know and I will introduce into a great bunch of friends who want you to be one too. But be warned!!! You will be up until all hours singing, laughing, and playing music. And there might be the odd dram or two of alcholic beverages. All the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: Mudcat gathering MD or Del. in Oct? From: Ferrara Date: 22 Sep 05 - 02:34 PM As someone who's been on the Getaway committee for years, I am more likely than most people to hear gripes and concerns about the impact of the large Mudcat contingent. There are concerns, but they don't detract from the warm welcome the Mudcat is given by people at the Getaway. The key to most concerns, I think, is that the Mudcatters are so eager to take advantage of every moment of the weekend to spend time with the people they've only met online up to now. Well, it makes sense. But maybe we can encourage you to make an effort to be involved more with the entire event. I would like to encourage everyone who is coming for the first time this year to consider themselves as coming to the FSGW Getaway first and foremost. It is -- and always has been -- a great event that now, incidentally, offers a chance to meet a whole lot of great Mudcatters and other wonderful people. I hope that you all -- especially the newbies -- will make a point of checking out all workshop sessions that might interest you, and not stick to those led by Mudcatters, although that might be your first impulse. We care a lot about the music we offer and feel it's something special. I think everybody's agreed on that! Here's an invitation to you. I hope you'll all take me up on it. It is to find someone (or several someones) at the Getaway who aren't involved with Mudcat but who seem interesting or make the kind of music you like; spend at least enough time talking or making music with them so you leave the Getaway feeling you know them.
