A football fan was fined £200 and banned from attending his local club matches for three years. His crime? He rushed on to the pitch to embrace one of the players who scored a goal and then went back to his seat. There was no violence or yobbish behavior, it was just that he was overjoyed that his team had scored. It WAS during the game and not at half or full time! It seems that the authorities considered this an outrage!!

Let's play "What If..." for a moment. What if a not-so-overjoyed fan were to rush onto the field and stab or attempt to stab a player? Do you think the authorities should wait until such a thing happens before putting some safeguards into place? The authorities have no way of knowing someone's intentions until after they have been put into action. Therefore, it makes sense to ban any spectator from rushing onto the playing field during a match. I would think this should apply to any such event anywhere. And before you go saying that they should have excused this particular implulsive individual once they saw what he was about, consider that to have done so would only serve to encourage others who, no matter what their intentions, might do the same. Would you like to have all the matches disrupted by such incidents. No, I didn't think so.

So, the players running into the stands it okay too? Like what happened in the States last year when a bunch of basketball players got into a fight with some fans who had been yelling at them?

The law itself is not an ass, but sometimes those who make the laws or who enforce the laws are.

I take all these stories with a pinch of salt unless I have seen the actual court report. The papers have a habit of omitting key facts such as (some years ago) the guy who was supposedly fined GBP2000 for dropping litter. No mention of him trying to pick a fight with the cop who told him to pick it up in the tabloids.

I have witnessed a westler - whose father and brother rushed from the stands to embrass their stalwart son/sibling.

Thankfully, the law of the mat was not upheld.

The wrestler went forward to championships - dispite the protests of other coaches.

I seem to remember a certain Mr Cantona (manchester United) rushing into the fsns and "kung fu" kicking an opposition supporter. Did he get banned from his club for 3 years and fined a weeks wages? Of course I fully accept that it was a (knee jerk) reaction to a fan calling abuse to his team, and he was very sorry (afterward).
One rule for us and another for them I say! ;-)
