I agree, Dave.

"No officers have gone to trial, though several received administrative punishment."

Why does she go to jail when others receive administrative punishment?

The scariest part of this war is that she is just one of the many, many young soldiers that are suffering for the decisions and/or inaction of their superiors.

Commander in Chief? - yeah right - Just think about it.

Would you like to serve under Bush?

PFC England did what she believed she had been told to do, by people appointed over her. While following orders hasn't been an acceptable defense since the Nuremburg War Trials, SOME blame must rest on all of her superior officers who allowed such an attitude or spirit to exist up and down the chain of command that these acts were seen as not only acceptable, but encouraged. The female brigadier general in charge of the whole system there has been disciplined, but not to the extent that England and her immediate superior who was also her lover. Another violation of good order and discipline.

In this, like any military situation, guidance flows from the top to the bottom. Blaming and punishing the folks down at the bottom of the problem while turning a blind eye to the Majors, Colonels, and General above her is hypocritical and wrong.

Dave

What she did was unacceptable. I know that the great majority of service personal over in "The Sand pit" take pride in treating prisoners with humanely, even though the prisoners would gladly slit their throats, and ours, given the chance.

But alot of the abuse pictures that were on the tv show nothing illegal, dispite looking shocking to an outsider whose emotions play in the way.

Glad she has been found guilty

she should be hanged. Torture almost never works and what we do, others will do to us. When you look at the pictures you have to consider an american in the iraq's position because that is exactly what will happen.

I agree, Bunnahabhain. Although I knew the reported story of Lyndie England, I too did a double take when I saw the thread title. Maybe it sould be: "England (US) convicted on six of seven". *G* (Where is Roger when you need him?)

Remember Mai Lai? William Caly got conviced for crimes he actually committed, and in the course of that, his government, responsible for a legion of crimes... simply walked away.

Anyone mind if the thread title was tweaked a bit to "Linday england con..." or "Private england..."?

This isn't just to annoy Shambles, but to make it's meaning clearer. GUEST have any problems with that?

There was an earlier thread on this subject, at the time when I believe a mistrial was declared. I believe she is not particularly authoritative and was doing what her boyfriend indicated that she do, pose for pictures. His testimony put her guilt in doubt. I'd be interested to know what it took to find her guilty this go-round.

You know, the commentators have often said that England was pointing in derision at the genitals of that naked 'detainee'. It has always seemed to me that it was actually worse- it seems to me -judging by the position of her hands - that she was miming pointing a rifle at his genitals.

Anyone remember who she was now? That was then, this is now, the rules have changed after Katrina. The torture has been taken out of the hands of amateurs and you can take comfort that it is now being done discreetly and professionally, and you never need to hear about it any more. The stupid jerk who was caught will be stoned to death, the originators and beneficiaries of the policy have clean hands and can face the public gaze unembarrassed.
