Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Don't Bite the Hand That's Feeding You From: Joe Offer Date: 13 May 09 - 09:56 PM Well, apparently there are people who like this song. Somebody sent me a link to a YouTube Recording today. The song is every bit as nasty today, as it was in 1915. -Joe- |
Subject: Lyr Add: DON'T BITE THE HAND THAT'S FEEDING YOU From: Jim Dixon Date: 04 Dec 04 - 08:54 PM This song is older than I thought. Lyrics below copied from FirstWorldWar.com. That page also has 2 audio files: one by Billy Murray from 1915, and one by Walter van Brunt from 1916. The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music also has the sheet music. The Record Lady's All-Time Country Favorites also has a recording of Gene Autry's WW2-era version, on Salute to Veterans Page 1. Autry doesn't sing the second verse. DON'T BITE THE HAND THAT'S FEEDING YOU (Words, Thomas Hoier. Music Jimmie Morgan. 1915) Last night, as I lay a-sleeping, A wonderful dream came to me. I saw Uncle Sammy weeping For his children from over the sea. They had come to him, friendless and starving, When from tyrant's oppression they fled, But now they abuse and revile him, Till at last in just anger he said: CHORUS: "If you don't like your Uncle Sammy, Then go back to your home o'er the sea, To the land from where you came, Whatever be its name, But don't be ungrateful to me! If you don't like the stars in Old Glory, If you don't like the Red, White and Blue, Then don't act like the cur in the story; Don't bite the hand that's feeding you!" "You recall the day you landed, How I welcomed you to my shore? When you came here empty handed, And allegiance forever you swore? I gathered you close to my bosom. Of food and of clothes you got both. So, when in trouble, I need you, You will have to remember your oath." CHORUS |
Subject: RE: bite the hand thats feeding you From: Ewan McVicar Date: 26 May 99 - 05:27 AM A fascinating song. Perhaps there are versions in other countries that say "We don't like you, Uncle Sammy Go back to your home o'er the sea?" Or is it another one-way system? Puts me in mind of a discussion in another place, where British folk performers are discussing how awkward it is to get a permit to come and perform in the USA when you have the booked gigs - Canada etc are no problem. Do US performers have real problems getting the OK to come and perform here in the UK? |
Subject: RE: bite the hand thats feeding you From: Wil Date: 25 May 99 - 09:14 PM Thanks for the song. I have saved it to a disk. I like my Uncle's version better. But this is do. Many many thanks. |

Subject: RE: bite the hand thats feeding you From: Gracie Date: 25 May 99 - 08:46 PM Wow! This is so neat! My great-uncle Mac used to sing this to us kids . I always thought it was so neat the way he could just sit down and tell old stories and sing old songs we'd never heard of and haven't heard much of since. This seems like such a clean and friendly site. Thanks to all of you! |

Subject: RE: bite the hand thats feeding you From: Joe Offer Date: 12 Jan 99 - 05:28 AM Allan, if it was published in 1931, it's different from the one Gene linked to. If you get a chance to post the lyrics in this thread, we'd sure appreciate it. If the thread disappears, put bite in the filter and set it for 90 days or so, and it will turn up. Thanks. -Joe Offer- |
