Subject: BS: Moving to Isle of Wight temp/perm From: Steve Parkes Date: 05 Oct 05 - 03:44 PM We've been planning to move to the IOW sometime, and since I'm still out of work (saving pennies, hence not much Mudcat activity), we reckon it ought to be in the next 6/12 months. We'd like to try something like letting our current house & renting on the island while we get settled, or maybe I'll go down by myself for a month or several and Sue will follow later. We know the island very well, but mainly from the visitors' perspective. Here's the important bit ... can anyone recommend places to stay/work/go to folk clubs/any other relevant thing? I'm an IT pro, but I'll happily consider a changeto something less lucrative but as much fun. |
Subject: RE: BS: Moving to Isle of Wight temp/perm From: vectis Date: 05 Oct 05 - 06:05 PM Put an advert in the County Press etc for a computer technician and you should be inundated with work as long as your hourly rate is reasonable. There is always a shortage of decent PC sorter outers. I'm told that there's a folk club at Shorwell and a session/club at Gurnard. You can always get the ferry and go to the Folcsle at Southampton. There always used to be plenty of cheapish holiday flats for rent in towns like Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor but you have to be out for Easter when the rent soars and the grockle return. Good luck. |

Subject: RE: BS: Moving to Isle of Wight temp/perm From: GUEST,steve the grockle Date: 02 Oct 06 - 05:14 PM Well, its probably too late to comment but I will anyway... The Daryman's Daughter at Arreton Barns has a drop-in folk night on Tuesday. When we called in on holiday it was a slightly surreal experience - a folk session with three accordions, two guitars, a clarinet and a lot of singing. Enjoyable though in case you think I'm complaining. Very varied repertoire - it felt a bit 'we all know each other' if you know what i mean which kept me out of it in terms of performance. Go and see it - its very old-world folk club on that one night's experience |
Subject: RE: BS: Moving to Isle of Wight temp/perm From: GUEST,Pat Date: 16 Jul 10 - 07:38 AM I moved to the Island back in Christmas 73 with my sons and although I did get some work eventually it was so hard to find anything. But I made such great friends in Newport and in the College where I studied IT. Unfortunately I did move back to Bristol where I came from in 97 and got the kind of job that I was looking for. But I value the friends I had on the Island. One or two died which was very sad and one of them Joe still comes to visit me, I will never forget them and will always be very dear to my heart. |

Subject: RE: BS: Moving to Isle of Wight temp/perm From: Steve Parkes Date: 16 Jul 10 - 03:17 PM Thanks Will. I'm a regular at Downland & the DD, and the Stag now & then. The Buddle is MUCH too far from my home in Totland! Actually, people express great astonishment that I'm prepared to travel as far as Arreton without a stop-over. |
Subject: RE: BS: Moving to Isle of Wight temp/perm From: bubblyrat Date: 16 Jul 10 - 04:35 PM The island of Vectis Is far,far away ; Just like Atlantis , (or so I've heard say). The natives are odd, A bit strange in the head; The men marry their sisters (Or so it is said). Outsiders don't go there, Which is just as well, For they'd end up being eaten ; (Or so I've heard tell). But if you MUST go there, Well, don't hold your breff-- All that incest and suchlike, Has made 'em tone deaf ! |
