Toadfrog, I didn't see the version you posted. What thread is it in? Is it the same as what Dick posted above? Dick's version was added to the April 2000 version of the database, but that version isn't in general circulation because of some technical problems. If you use the Digitrad and Forum Search (SuperSearch), you can see if songs have been posted in either the Forum or the Digital Tradition, and that will save duplications. If you have a different version of a song to post, please try to use an existing thread on the song instead of starting yet another thread. the fewer threads we have on songs, the less confustion. Our general policy is one song, one thread.

Hmm. I posted this song lately. I had not found it, but here it was. It seems to me it qualifies for the DT. Otherwise people will go on posting it. It sure is a traditional song. Or am I wrong?

The tune to "Chinamen never eat chili" is

"Cilito Lindo" its' chording is in the database.

As with most folksongs there are several variations

in New Mexico the one I heard on the "Chinamen" varied with:

"In China they do it for chili" and

"Waltz me around by my willie."

THE collection of dirty limericks is by G. Legman--two fat volumes. Limericks are the one type of true folksong we're not including in the Digital Tradition--if we did, we wouldn't have room for anything else.

When I was in Infantry School at Fort Benning we used to sing "Chinamen Never Eat Chili" to pass the time as the cattle trucks hauled us from one training area to another. It was an organized, participatory song; anyone who wanted to sing a verse raised his hand during the chorus, and the person designated as "leader" would point to the next singer. The chorus was as follows:

Aye, Aye, Aye, Aye –
Chinamen never eat chili--
So let's have another verse
That’s worse than the other verse--
And waltz me around again Willie.

The verses were explicitly dirty limericks and, since the content of the verses changed every time the song was sung, it would be impossible for anyone to remember them. The only one I can recall goes

There was a young lady from Thrace
Whose corset grew too tight to lace;
Her mother said, "Nellie,
There’s things in your belly
That didn't go in through your face."

Hi,

I've just (mis)spent over an hour looking on the web for the lyrics to one of my favorite old dirty ditties - "Roll me over in the clover", also known as "The Nurses Song".

But all to no avail.

This wonderful site did provide me with the words to Barnacle Bill, another old goodie.

Does anyone know where I might find what I'm looking for? If so you could either email them directly to me ([e-mail]) or post something here.
