In the UK there is a glut of portable toilets which look like Dr Whos 'Tardis'........ our family changed a letter in the name to suit....... 'Turdis'... is such an earthy sounding name.

Ah Mr Red, you finally found a toilet for tight-arses?! :-P

Regarding the Aussie "Kenny' character, he is currently doing a TV series on toilets round the world...

Sign in one toilet at work (it has a macerator and small bore outflow)

"Please do not flush anything except toilet paper down the toilet"

Not that I obey!

Great Australian movie on this topic called 'Kenny', shot documentary style about a bloke who has a "Port-a-loo" business, (temporary toilets)and it is hilarious! Kenny goes to a convention in (I think) Las Vegas on the subject, and has all sorts of adventures on the way.

I got two slick, modern new'uns in last year, as part of my prettyfying of the house before I sell it. One is a "compact" cistern job for my own personal use off the bedroom. They are both Italian, I think, and I don't know if it's anything to do with the mediterranean diet, but they aren't as wide at the bendy bit! The one in my "en suite" has bordered on the wire coathanger treatment a couple of times. It also has this weird plastic float and mechanism thing in it, (it works on dual flush buttons from the top), and it's constantly dribbling down into the pan, even after I have had a good poke around. However, despite having a very small capacity, compared with the trad English version downstairs, it somehow mostly seems to do the job reasonably well. The other new one has a lever.

By the way, anyone worked out why the German toilets all have a shelf in the pan?

Andrea

We just got new toilets, Toto brand, and they do the job efficiently with little water, albeit a bit noisily. Very satisfactory! The city gave us $100 for replacing our old ones.
Not the cheapest, but excellent quality.

If your old style works well & you want to conserve on water just keep adding a brich at a time to the tank till it doesn't do a good job then back up a brich or 2.

Here's a song perfectly seated for this thread (in the DT)

I'M GLAD I'M WORKING DOWN BELOW
(Words & Music by John M Garrett)

Oh a sewerman am I and my trade I deftly ply
As underneath the city streets I go
And my hope for paradise is to wade up to my thighs
Oh I'm glad I'm working down below

CHORUS:
Down below, down below
Oh it's dark but it's home to me, you know
It's the only place, I find, I can get some peace of mind
Yes I'm glad I'm working down below

There are rules to the trade that have to be obeyed
And every movement must be made just so
You must watch just where you stand, and just where you put your hand
Still I'm glad I'm working down below

There was cause for alarm at a nearby sewage farm
When a man fell down a pit some years ago
Since the accident occurred he's been lying there interred
Oh I'm glad I'm working down below

Oh in Paris I have found they take tourists underground
And even charge a small fee for the show
While in Venice I've heard tell they sail boats on it as well
Oh I'm glad I'm working down below

Oh it is a wonderful life, you can hide here from your wife
And leave behind your every care and woe
I may be a sewer rat, but I'm not to be sniffed at
Oh I'm glad I'm working down below

Barry

Back when I was testing things at Consumer Reports, we checked out a doozy called the Destroilet-- a combination toilet and propane-fired incinerator. Worked pretty well (if you didn'tr peek), until one of the larger staffers simply overpowered it and damn near gassed the neighborhood.

Bert, I'll have to go upstairs and check the title -- I know it comes in two flavors, boy and girl.

Justine gave me the girl version.

The flush sounds ends in a little girl's giggle.

Tom solved the problem of the multi-gallon flush when he built our post-and-beam kit house (with his then-wife) in 1977 -- we have a composting toilet.

Not for everybody, but, hey, it never freezes in the winter when other pipes are solid. (We heat primarily with wood, too.)

And, since Barry Finn's wife Justine gave me a children's toilet training book with a computer chip that plays a flushing noise, people who are not Soddy-Potty-trained can listen to a nice flushing sound for closure.

I haven't alerted Hildebrand to this thread. It would just start him off. As Stilly River Sage points out he had a serious problem with American toilets. (Your toilet was fine, by the way! SRS.)
How to put this delicately?
When sitting down the level of the water is prone to link up with elderly (that's the key word) bits of male anatomy. It wasn't a problem when he was youthful. He spent his first 30 years in America and a trip back 10 years ago didn't cause any concern. I'm thinking about a sort of harness affair if we ever visit again. Any ideas?
Cheers, Joy

Well now I've seen everything!

I saw a show on TV not long ago where they were demonstrating a toilet that would flush 24 golf balls, so I went looking for it with Google. Not only did I find that one, but toilets that raise the lid when they sense you coming into the room, and toilets with an aquarium in a see-through cistern - in this video. If you click on 'watch' where it tells you to choose a video, you can bypass the commercial.

I gather they do have carefully figgered out new ones that 'can' do the job, but as Bobert says, thay can be expensive. I talked to a plumber who says old toilets salvaged from houses bring premium prices these days when folks refuse to use those chancey new ones@

Aussie toilets do use a better design than American ones.
I was looking for Californian wildflower pictures the other day, though, when I found a wonderful poppy-urinal. It was in the shape of a Californian poppy - bright orange. I want one! Don't care if I can't use it and True-love prefers the lemon tree. I want one!

is like the ones that they have in Sweden.
there are two choices on many of them
a little bit of water, if that's all
you need, and another button if you
think it will take more...this
saves a lot of water in the

save by using this

Bobert -

I'll certainly agree that when the US outlawed the old 'uns the immediate replacements were "crap." I had the misfortune of not having a place to salvage, and had to install a couple of them.

I will say though that the last 3 I've personally installed were of the "low volume type," and all 3 work better than any of the old ones I'd had before.

You've just got to quit dealing with "low volume sellers" who still have old ones on the floor if you want the latest in "low volume crap..(.er.)s"..#

We just got a new Caroma dual flush from Australia. ( 1.6 / 0.8 US Gal) We haven't hooked it up yet, as the new powder room is not yet complete, so right now it sits by my computer and I admire it as a art piece. I'll let you know how it works. I believe, unlike most NA toilets, its not a siphon, its a wash down.

I'm betting it works just fine. Then again there may be a lot of dirty toilets in Australia. Either that or North Americans are just more full of sh*t than their Aus counterparts.

This thread title caught my eye. Many years ago, I was asked to survey one of the Seattle "turn of the century" mansions. I dutifully did so, counted the bathrooms, bedrooms, perused the basement for signs of rot, etc. This was/is a four story mansion but in 1895. I spent a full day going through crack and crevice looking for problems that needed attention.

I finally reached the fourth story   w a a a y   up high. Lo and behold, I found a tiny bathroom in the corner of a "maid's room." Yep, the toilet was imported from England and it was stamped in that beautiful blue dye ... "Thomas Crapper!"

I offered to trade my day's work for just the toilet but the homeowner was too smart for that! Bob(deckman)Nelson

Hey, gol danged, you heard me right... I.6 gallon flushes??? Like with 1.6 gallons ya gotta flush the thing half a dozen or more times to get it flushed??? Well, accordin' to the Wes Ginny Slide Rule the new water savin' toilets use twice as much water to get the job done?!?!?!...

Yeah, me and the P-Vine went toidy shoppin' today and after seein' what's out there I decided to go by the old hotel I own and poke 'round thru it and found a nice old toidy with a tank that holds 'bout 3 and 1/2 gallons... I'll go back, snag it, clean it up, put new innards in it and keep gettin' up... And save water in the process...

And the best part about this is there's another dozen old toilets in the hotel...

Bobert
