Subject: BS: Finally - Charges of torture From: dianavan Date: 23 Oct 05 - 01:46 AM "What is happening is that Ms. Davidson and Lawyers Against the War have laid charges against George Bush Jr; accusing him of aiding, abetting, and counseling the commission of torture. This charge is based on the abuses of the prisoners held at the U.S. prisons in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba and Abu-Ghraib, Iraq including Canadian minor Omar Khadr, who has been held in Cuba since 2001. "Many Canadians don't realize that we have not only the right but the responsibility to pursue these charges, it is a responsibility that the Canadian government owes not only to the people of Canada, but to the people of the world. The 1987 Convention Against Torture [And Other Cruel, Inhuman Or Degrading Treatment Or Punishment] binds us to this action." Canada ratified the UN Convention on Torture along with 139 other nations; promising to protect the inalienable right of all the world's citizens to live a life free of torture." Subject: RE: BS: Finally - Charges of torture From: paddymac Date: 23 Oct 05 - 05:40 AM Makes for interesting reading, and heightened political visability, but nothing more. Heads of state are not vulnerable to lawsuits for their official actions, even those prior to becoming the HOS. Witness the case, I think in Texas, where one side wanted to bring the Pope into the action. It had to do with his actions/inactions in a sexual abuse scandal before he became Pope. But then, the US has found away to get around such niggeling inconveniences. Invasion. Noriega and Hussain come to mind. American voters hava a chance at "regime change" every four years, but the collective "we" blew it last year. |
