Subject: BS: Ordered: Fall/Rise Reginald Perrin - dvd

Hi all,

I have to share my excitement with people who will understand. About 30 years ago there was a tv show called The Fall & Rise of Reginald Perrin. I haven't seen it since then and all I know is that it was one of the funniest shows I've ever seen on tv. I've done Internet searches looking for it to buy but only found secondhand videos, and I read a lot of other people's reviews of it and they rave about it.

I did another search yesterday and there in an Oz catalogue was the DVD of the first series. I have ordered it and have to wait 2-4 weeks for it to come back in stock. They must have sold out already. I just hope that the 2nd series will also become available. Apparently Series 3 was not much good compared to Series 1 & 2.

I have also ordered the DVD of Canterbury Tales, the remake into modern re-telling within a modern context. I saw most of the episodes on tv a month or so ago.

It reminds me of what makes a good story: great characters with complexities and not just shallow representations of stereotypes, convoluted plots with intertwining bits that just make it a very worthwile experience to read and/or watch them on tv. It reminds me of how much I loved studying Chaucer at Uni.

It also makes me want to watch the BBC Shakespeare series again. Unfortunately it hasn't been on tv for years, but one year, for a few months, the Oz ABC had every one of Shakespeare's plays on Sunday afternoons. What a great storyteller he was!

I'm nearly ready to start writing, I think. I'm getting inspired.

Helen

Hi Helen

I think that BBC have released most of their Shakespeare series again on DVD (maybe only from BBC rather than on general release).

Some brilliant actors and interpretations.

We were addicted to the Rise & Fall of RP, and, later, Butterflies! We see Geoffrey Palmer acting in another BBC sitcom, now, As Time Goes By. He is one of our very favourite actors. Glad to see it is out on DVD, thanks.

Yes, Morticia, I'm going to buy the books too.

[I just knew there would be other Mudcatters who liked The Fall & rise of RP]

May I first to say that I didn't get where I am today by not watching (and reading) David Nobb's great series.

I think I'll pick up that DVD too, when I get a chance. I also got to read a very funny book by David Nobbs, called "Second To Last In The Sack Race". To see Leonard Rossiter again though... I can understand what you are getting excited about Helen.

Second to Last in the Sack Race is the first part of a trilogy, the other two are great as well......other books/series by David Nobbs to look out for would be A Bit of a Do and it's counterparts.....his very best, IMO.

I have to wait a few weeks to arrive. It's been a long long time since I saw it on tv, but I am sure it will be worth waiting for.

I'll try DN's other books as well.

All 21 episodes (on 3 DVDs for £39.99 Sterling) of "The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin" are available from www.eRazatmataz.co.uk (NB. THE "e" after "www." is NOT A MISTAKE). "Butterflies" is also available, and many classic TV series (comedy, drama, etc).

Their number is 0870 787 0099 (if dialling within the United Kingdom; you may have to add a prefix if dialling from outside; I think it might be +44 but am not certain).

Thank you Guest. I did a search on the 'Net and that site wasn't one I saw. If I had seen that I would probably have ordered the set, but I have already ordered Series 1 so I'll wait & see whether the Oz ABC shop gets Series 2 as well.

It was the early 80's and I was living in Nashville when I first saw RP.......and I have laughed for all the years since. Would you expect Spaw NOT to love something with a farting chair? Alan, Katy, and I were living together then and we would get up at 6 AM on a Saturday just to watch this damn thing! We didn't dare have coffee or food around as we watched.

Those were some very good times in my life and I get warm fuzzies thinking about them as I sit here this early morning.

Spaw
