Subject: RE: BS: The name of a film? From: Firecat Date: 27 Oct 05 - 07:53 PM Was it Belleville Rendezvous? |
Subject: RE: BS: The name of a film? From: CET Date: 27 Oct 05 - 08:07 PM Charmion actually -- No, it was the Triplets of Belleville, and its central characters were a bicycle-obsessed boy and his elderly mother. |

Subject: RE: BS: The name of a film? From: Dave Masterson Date: 28 Oct 05 - 03:59 AM It was called Belleville Rendezvous in the UK - fantastic film. I particularly liked the way the French mafia drove around in stretch 2CV's! For me the film also caught to a tee the single-mindedness, and sheer physical effort, of the racing cyclist. |

Subject: RE: BS: The name of a film? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 28 Oct 05 - 12:30 PM Sounds wonderful, and I see that my library has a copy that is on the shelf, so I'll go pick it up this afternoon. Thanks for the thread! SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: The name of a film? From: GUEST,Mrr Date: 28 Oct 05 - 04:01 PM OK, here is another one: it had Charles Laughton with amazing eyebrows as a madman, there were people trying to wreck a ship and being foiled by the woman who was then kidnapped by the insane Laughton, who ends up throwing himself from the rigging of another ship? Old movie, of course, black & white... |
Subject: RE: BS: The name of a film? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 28 Oct 05 - 05:45 PM Take a look here and maybe you'll find it in the Laughton filmography. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: The name of a film? From: SINSULL Date: 29 Oct 05 - 11:37 AM Sounds like a cross between the Hunchback of Notre Dame and Mutiny on the Bounty. |
Subject: RE: BS: The name of a film? From: JennieG Date: 30 Oct 05 - 12:28 AM Hunchback of the Bounty? or Mutiny at Notre Dame? Oh dear....I think I have been at the pills again...... Cheers JennieG |

Subject: RE: BS: The name of a film? From: Tannywheeler Date: 31 Oct 05 - 01:16 PM Jamaica Inn, with a very young O'Hara (who played wife to John Wayne a number of times); made in the '30s; based on a famous novel; Laughton played a local magistrate/minor nobleman who was the "fence" for a cause-a-shipwreck-steal-the-cargoandeverythingelse-and-sell-it gang on the coast of Cornwall (I think--that western-reaching penninsula that's the south edge of Britain). Lots of racing around at night in high winds and dark shadows.... Tw |
Subject: RE: BS: The name of a film? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 31 Oct 05 - 01:34 PM I wondered about Jamaica Inn, but I read the novel, didn't see the movie. I think I read that the film changed who was the bad guy. |
Subject: RE: BS: The name of a film? From: GUEST,Chief Chaos Date: 31 Oct 05 - 01:47 PM Just take a couple dried frogs pills JennieG and everything will be alright. The Triplets of Belleville seemed a bit odd to me. Maybe it was that the cyclists seemed to be autistic. Try Tokyo Godfathers for a really good story and animation. |
Subject: RE: BS: The name of a film? From: Cluin Date: 01 Nov 05 - 01:08 AM Loved the first few minutes of Triplettes that was drawn in a retro style like an old Max Fleisher artoon, especially the cameo appearance of an obvious Django caricature on guitar (check out the fingers). |
