Subject: Folk on ITN London at 1pm/6pm today From: GUEST,webmaster@efdss.org Date: 03 Nov 05 - 07:49 AM If anyone out there has a spare moment between 1pm and 6pm today, would you please consider phoning this UK number: 0845 607 1902 (local rate within the UK) Cecil Sharp House is up for a grant from the Big Lottery to make it accessible to disabled people and do a lot more dissemination work of the resources that we have there. Apparently it is a "Restoration" type phone-vote competition, with the winner (we are up against Camberwell School of Arts) getting a grant. I'm aware that a lot of people have issues with the English Folk Dance and Song Society and the politics that have occurred therein - but this vote will be for keeping up the beautiful building that Cecil Sharp, Maud Karpeles and William Kimber laid the foundation stones for, and making it accessible to more people. (I'm also hoping that they'll give me some money to fund my "make the digital archives publicly accessible on the internet" project!) Please help if you can, and ask your family and friends to help as well - we could do some wonderful things with this money... |

Subject: RE: Folk on ITN London at 1pm/6pm today From: greg stephens Date: 03 Nov 05 - 09:53 AM When you ring the number, it doesnt tell you what you are voting for. How do we know this thread wasn't started by a remarkably ingenious employee of the Camberwell School of Art? |
Subject: RE: Folk on ITN London at 1pm/6pm today From: GUEST Date: 03 Nov 05 - 03:07 PM If I didn't know the history of the efdss website I would have been most suspicious of a post purporting to be for an English organisation with a US domain name. |
Subject: RE: Folk on ITN London at 1pm/6pm today From: George Papavgeris Date: 03 Nov 05 - 03:32 PM The website tells you, Greg - though you were right to be suspicious (I too checked first) |

Subject: RE: Folk on ITN London at 1pm/6pm today From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 03 Nov 05 - 04:22 PM Rats. Missed it. Is there any way to vote after the deadline, and will they accept calls from Ireland as being valid? I used to work at C#H and will always have a soft spot for it. I didn't know William Kimber laid a foundation stone - what a magnificent player he was! And I would probably not have heard his music without the Society. Let us know if there's anything more we lateniks can do. Wishing it every success, Bonnie |
Subject: RE: Folk on ITN London at 1pm/6pm today From: George Papavgeris Date: 03 Nov 05 - 04:32 PM I don't know about calls from Ireland, but the switchboard is open till midnight. I voted a dozen times so far. |
Subject: RE: Folk on ITN London at 1pm/6pm today From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 03 Nov 05 - 04:49 PM Thanks for the info, El Greko, which encouraged me to do it (three times, for luck) and the voice on the line said "Your vote has now been counted, thank you" so it obviusly worked. To repeat myself from the other thread: If anyone else from outside the UK wants to ring, amend the number to 0044 845 607 1902 It takes literally a few seconds, no longer, so go for it - |
Subject: RE: Folk on ITN London at 1pm/6pm today From: Matthew Edwards Date: 03 Nov 05 - 04:53 PM According to the ITV Peoples Millions website voting is open until midnight, and a household may record up to 10 votes. It is extremely confusing to follow all the details but a brief summary is that each ITV region is putting up two candidates for funding from the Big Lottery over several nights this week, and every night only one bid can win a grant of up to £50,000. Tonight's contest in the ITV London region is between Camberwell Arts and Cecil Sharp House. On the Big Lottery site some details of the bid can be viewed, but these seem to be very much abbreviated - so that it appears that all the EFDSS intends is to "spend an award of £56,242 to create a sound garden containing naturally powered sound sculptures." I've voted five times so far for the EFDSS, but I'd be much happier if I could see how these funds would be used to improve access to the library. |
Subject: RE: Folk on ITN London at 1pm/6pm today From: Gwenzilla Date: 03 Nov 05 - 05:02 PM Unfortunately, the TV spots themselves had to be re-shot in haste this afternoon, which is one reason why the information both on the website and in the TV spots may be a bit abbreviated. I do not have definite information on the accessibility improvements, but I'll ask around. |

Subject: RE: Folk on ITN London at 1pm/6pm today From: Matthew Edwards Date: 03 Nov 05 - 05:43 PM As William Kimber's name has been mentioned this is as good a time as any to show just why the EFDSS is worth supporting; they have just published The Anglo-Concertina Music of William Kimber by Dan Worrall, and if you are quick you can buy it for the introductory price of £11.50 (plus £2 p&p). Details can be found in the News section of the EFDSS website, while purchases can be made online via the Publications section of the Folk Shop. (Non UK purchasers may need to email for shipping information.) The book has received a glowing and really well-informed review from Andy Turner on the Musical Traditions website here William Kimber - Review. The publications side of the EFDSS has come to life over the past few years; this, and the songbooks and the CDs really do make a difference in spreading the word. Great work! |
